How to Find Your Mercury's Color Code

Mercury places the paint color code on the drivers door jamb. On the color plate, the code appears near EX PT (Exterior Paint), typically above or below; sometimes the actual color is embossed on the plate and not where expected. The typical format is WT/M6640, but the M6640 part is rarely used and often only WT appears. WT corresponds to Performance White Clearcoat. Pre 1970 Mercurys can be problematic due to same-name, different-color issues and different codes.

About Mercury Paint

Mercury cars come from the Ford family, so they have very reliable paint. If you have an older classic like a 1960s Cougar, it likely has "single-stage" paint, which is a bit softer and easy to polish to a high shine. Newer models like the Mountaineer or Grand Marquis use a modern "basecoat and clearcoat" system that is much tougher and helps stop the color from fading in the sun.

Application Tips

This paint is very friendly to use because it flows evenly and does not dry too fast. When you are using a spray or a brush, it is best to put on several thin layers instead of one thick one to avoid drips. Because Mercury has over 1,000 different color codes, always double-check your paint code on the driver's side door sticker to make sure you have the perfect match.

Quick Summary

  • Paint Feel: Most modern Mercury cars have "Medium to Hard" paint. This means the clear coat is very durable, but it might take a little extra effort if you are trying to sand out a scratch by hand.
  • Best Advice: Always use a good primer first. Since many Mercury colors are metallic or pearl, a smooth primer layer helps the tiny metal flakes lay flat so the color looks the same across the whole car.
  • Pro Tip: Wait about 10 to 15 minutes between each coat of paint. This "flash time" lets the solvents evaporate so the next layer sticks better and stays smooth.
