How to Find Your 1995 Mercury's Color Code

Mercury places the paint color code on the drivers door jamb. On the color plate, the code appears near EX PT (Exterior Paint), typically above or below; sometimes the actual color is embossed on the plate and not where expected. The typical format is WT/M6640, but the M6640 part is rarely used and often only WT appears. WT corresponds to Performance White Clearcoat. Pre 1970 Mercurys can be problematic due to same-name, different-color issues and different codes.

1995 Mercury Background Info

The 1995 Mercury Vibe

Welcome to 1995-the year the Macarena was unavoidable and your neighbor just traded in the family wagon for a brand-new Mercury Villager. Whether it was the "fancy" Capri convertible or the sensible Tracer, Mercury was leaning hard into a clean, professional aesthetic. We've dialed in the essential survivors from this year, focusing on the tones that actually lasted: the crisp Oxford White, Performance White, and that ubiquitous 90s staple, Silver Frost Metallic. It was a time of transition, moving away from the loud neons of the late 80s into a look that said you finally had your life together.

Paint Health Check

If you're looking at a 1995 Mercury today, you're likely staring at the "Shedding Season." This was the height of the Peeling Era. Back then, the factory started getting efficient with basecoat/clearcoat systems, but the bond between them wasn't always a lifetime commitment. By now, the clear coat on the roof and hood of most Villagers has likely "delaminated"-fancy talk for peeling off like a bad sunburn. Once that clear starts to lift and turn white at the edges, it's not just an eyesore; the exposed basecoat underneath has zero protection and will turn chalky faster than you can find a cassette tape.

Restoration Tip

When you're dealing with a 1995 finish, you have to stop the "feathering." If you see a chip where the clear is starting to lift away from the color, don't just dab paint on top-it'll just peel off with the old clear. Use a fine-grit sandpaper (around 1000-1500) to very gently sand back the "lip" of the failing clear coat until it's smooth to the touch. Once you've stabilized the edge, apply your touch-up color and seal it with a fresh clear coat immediately. This "locks down" the repair and prevents the rest of the factory clear from deciding to vacate the premises.
