How to Find Your 2005 Mercury's Color Code

Mercury places the paint color code on the drivers door jamb. On the color plate, the code appears near EX PT (Exterior Paint), typically above or below; sometimes the actual color is embossed on the plate and not where expected. The typical format is WT/M6640, but the M6640 part is rarely used and often only WT appears. WT corresponds to Performance White Clearcoat. Pre 1970 Mercurys can be problematic due to same-name, different-color issues and different codes.

2005 Mercury Background Info

The 2005 Mercury Vibe

Welcome to 2005-the year Mercury was desperately trying to convince the world it wasn't just a Ford in a tuxedo. It was a time of "luxury for the mall-crawl set," where you could pick up a Mountaineer for the carpool lane or the legendary Marauder if you wanted to look like an undercover cop with a mean streak. We've got 19 different colors in the books for this year, and let me tell you, Mercury loved their metallics. They were obsessed with "Grandpa Gold" and "Boardroom Silver." You couldn't throw a rock without hitting a Grand Marquis in Arizona Beige Metallic or a Sable in Silver Birch Pearl. It was a sophisticated palette for folks who wanted to look expensive without the Lincoln price tag.

Paint Health Check

If you're staring at your Montego or Monterey and seeing what looks like a bad case of road-rash on the roof, you've hit The Peeling Era. By 2005, the industry had mastered the look of Basecoat/Clearcoat, but the "marriage" between the color and the clear wasn't always a happy one. We call it Delamination. Once the UV rays bake those horizontal surfaces long enough, the clear coat starts to lose its grip and flakes off like a cheap pie crust. If you've got Oxford White or Silver Metallic, you're at high risk. Once that clear lifts and the base color is exposed to the air, it's only a matter of time before the whole panel looks like a chalkboard.

Restoration Tip

The secret to keeping these mid-2000s finishes alive is simple: Seal your chips immediately before the clear lifts. On these Mercury models, a tiny rock chip on the hood is an invitation for moisture to tunnel under the clear coat. Once it gets a foothold, the delamination spreads like a virus. When you're using our touch-up, don't just blob it in. Clean the area, sand the "feather edge" of the failing clear very gently if it's already started to lift, and get that fresh seal on there. If you catch it early, you can stop a $500 hood respray with a few minutes of steady-handed work.
