How to Find Your Mercury Capri's Color Code

Mercury places the paint color code on the drivers door jamb. On the color plate, the code appears near EX PT (Exterior Paint), typically above or below; sometimes the actual color is embossed on the plate and not where expected. The typical format is WT/M6640, but the M6640 part is rarely used and often only WT appears. WT corresponds to Performance White Clearcoat. Pre 1970 Mercurys can be problematic due to same-name, different-color issues and different codes.

The Color Breakdown

Mercury didn't play it safe with the Capri. Across its various lives-from the European import to the Fox-body muscle and the 90s Australian roadster-they recorded a staggering 52 colors. They really went for it, giving us everything from the bold Magenta Metallic and Polynesian Green Metallic to the more buttoned-down Silver Fox Gray Poly. Whether you're rocking a Cardinal Red convertible or a Maize Yellow classic, your car was designed to stand out in a parking lot full of boring beige sedans.

What to Watch For

Before you start dabbling with that touch-up brush, you need to find your "recipe." Open your driver's door and look at the jamb; you're looking for a sticker or metal plate where a two-digit code sits right above the words "Exterior Paint." Now, a word of honesty: these cars have a complicated relationship with the sun. The clear coat on the hood and trunk lid, especially on the 90s roadsters and the Indigo Blue or Cobalt Blue metallics, has a habit of getting tired and peeling back like a bad sunburn. If you see white, chalky fading, that's just the paint asking for a little extra attention before it decides to check out entirely.

Driveway Repair Tip

Since so many Capri colors are "Poly" or Metallic (looking at you, Cayman Green), those tiny metallic flakes like to settle at the bottom of the bottle. Shake your touch-up pen or bottle for at least 60 seconds-long after you think you're done-to wake up those sparkles. When you're filling in a chip, remember that "thin is win." Use the very tip of the brush to dab a tiny amount into the center of the chip and let it spread itself out. If you try to do it all in one thick glob, it'll look like a mountain on a flat plain. Give it 20 minutes to dry, and if it still looks a little shallow, just add one more tiny layer. Patience is your best tool here!
