How to Find Your 1996 Mercury's Color Code

Mercury places the paint color code on the drivers door jamb. On the color plate, the code appears near EX PT (Exterior Paint), typically above or below; sometimes the actual color is embossed on the plate and not where expected. The typical format is WT/M6640, but the M6640 part is rarely used and often only WT appears. WT corresponds to Performance White Clearcoat. Pre 1970 Mercurys can be problematic due to same-name, different-color issues and different codes.

1996 Mercury Background Info

The 1996 Mercury Vibe

Ah, 1996. The year the Macarena was unavoidable and the Mercury Villager was the undisputed king of the carpool lane. Whether you were hypermiling a Tracer or hauling the family in a Villager, Mercury was leaning hard into a clean, "professional" aesthetic. Our records show the survivors of this era are almost always dressed in the essentials: Performance White and Silver Frost Metallic. These weren't just colors; they were the uniform of the mid-90s suburban legend-sophisticated enough for the office, but tough enough for the grocery store run.

Paint Health Check

We are currently parked right in the middle of "The Peeling Era." In 1996, the factory was using a basecoat/clearcoat system that looked deep and glossy when it was new, but it had a nasty habit of "delaminating" as it aged. If you're driving a Performance White model, you might notice the paint literally jumping off the primer in sheets. If it's Silver Frost, the clear coat on the roof and hood is likely flaking away like a bad sunburn. Once that clear layer lifts, the basecoat underneath has about as much UV protection as a screen door, and it'll turn chalky before you can finish your next oil change.

Restoration Tip

The trick with 1996 iron is to "stop the bleed." If you see a chip or a tiny bubble where the clear is starting to lift, you need to seal it immediately before the wind at highway speeds turns that chip into a canyon. Use a plastic razor blade to gently flick away any clear coat that has already lost its grip until you reach a "hard" edge that won't budge. Clean it, and seal that edge with a fresh layer of touch-up paint. You're essentially "capping" the failure to keep moisture from getting under the rest of the finish and lifting it off the car.
