How to Find Your 1993 Mercury's Color Code

Mercury places the paint color code on the drivers door jamb. On the color plate, the code appears near EX PT (Exterior Paint), typically above or below; sometimes the actual color is embossed on the plate and not where expected. The typical format is WT/M6640, but the M6640 part is rarely used and often only WT appears. WT corresponds to Performance White Clearcoat. Pre 1970 Mercurys can be problematic due to same-name, different-color issues and different codes.

1993 Mercury Background Info

The 1993 Mercury Vibe

Welcome to 1993-the year of the "no-frills" cool. Whether you were hauling the family in a Mercury Villager or trying to catch a breeze in a Capri convertible, the aesthetic was clean, crisp, and heavily dominated by the "White Sale" look. We've kept the heavy hitters of that era alive in our database, focusing on the survivors like Marine Blue Metallic, Oxford White, and Performance White. Back then, Mercury wasn't trying to reinvent the rainbow; they were perfecting the suburban uniform, and these colors were the gold standard of the driveway.

Paint Health Check

If you're still rocking original factory paint, you're officially in "The Peeling Era." In 1993, the industry was deep into the transition to basecoat-clearcoat systems, and Mercury's clear coats from this window are notorious for having commitment issues. We call it delamination. You'll see it starting on the horizontal surfaces-the roof of the Tracer or the hood of the Villager-where the sun has cooked the bond between the color and the clear. Once that clear coat starts to lift and flake away like a bad sunburn, the base coat underneath is left naked to the elements, leading to rapid fading and chalking.

Restoration Tip

The golden rule for 1993 survivors: Seal your chips immediately before the clear lifts. If you spot a tiny rock chip on that Marine Blue hood, don't ignore it. Air and moisture are the enemies; once they get under the edge of the clear coat, they'll start prying it up, and before you know it, you've got a "peel-o-matic" situation on your hands. Use a high-quality solvent-based touch-up to fill the void and "glue" the edges of the clear back down. It's the only way to stop the spread and keep your Mercury from looking like it's molting.
