How to Find Your 1997 Mercury's Color Code

Mercury places the paint color code on the drivers door jamb. On the color plate, the code appears near EX PT (Exterior Paint), typically above or below; sometimes the actual color is embossed on the plate and not where expected. The typical format is WT/M6640, but the M6640 part is rarely used and often only WT appears. WT corresponds to Performance White Clearcoat. Pre 1970 Mercurys can be problematic due to same-name, different-color issues and different codes.

1997 Mercury Background Info

The 1997 Mercury Vibe

Welcome to 1997, the year Mercury decided every car should look like a polished river stone. Whether you were floating down the interstate in a Grand Marquis or trying to look "sensible" in a Sable or Mystique, the aesthetic was all about those soft, aerodynamic curves. We've kept our focus on the heavy hitters of the era-the survivors that actually made it out of the nineties without looking like a used bar of soap. You've likely got the "Big Four" on your hands: the deep, classy Dark Toreador Red Pearl, the crisp Oxford or Performance White, or that ubiquitous Silver Frost Metallic that seemed to cover half the Mountaineers in every suburban driveway.

Paint Health Check

If you're looking at your 1997 Mercury today, you're likely staring at the poster child for the "Peeling Era." In the late nineties, the bond between the basecoat and the clear coat was about as stable as a celebrity marriage. We call it delamination, and it's the silent killer of the Cougar and the Villager alike. That clear coat acts as a UV shield, but once it gets a "sunburn" and starts flaking off in white, crispy sheets, the pigment underneath is defenseless. If your roof or trunk lid looks like it's shedding its skin, you're in the danger zone where the basecoat starts to chalk out and disappear.

Restoration Tip

Here's the deal: with 1997 factory clear, you have to be a hawk about stone chips. On a Tracer or a Grand Marquis, a single deep chip is a gateway for moisture to crawl under the clear coat and start lifting it from the base. Seal your chips immediately. If you see the edges of a chip starting to look "milky" or white, the clear has already lost its grip. Take a fine-grit sanding block, gently feather the edge of the lift until you hit solid ground, and get some fresh protection on there before the delamination spreads across the entire hood. Once the clear lifts, there's no "buffing" it back to life-you're either sealing it now or repainting the whole panel later.
