How to Find Your 1998 Mercury's Color Code

Mercury places the paint color code on the drivers door jamb. On the color plate, the code appears near EX PT (Exterior Paint), typically above or below; sometimes the actual color is embossed on the plate and not where expected. The typical format is WT/M6640, but the M6640 part is rarely used and often only WT appears. WT corresponds to Performance White Clearcoat. Pre 1970 Mercurys can be problematic due to same-name, different-color issues and different codes.

1998 Mercury Background Info

The 1998 Mercury Vibe

Welcome to 1998, the year the sleek "New Edge" Cougar tried to reinvent the brand while the Grand Marquis continued to float over potholes like a living room sofa. Mercury was hitting its stride with a palette that defined the late '90s mall parking lot. Our database tracks the survivors of this era-the heavy hitters like Spruce Green Metallic and Silver Frost Metallic. If you're looking at a Mountaineer or a Sable from this vintage, you're likely staring at one of these five "evergreen" colors that refused to go out of style, even when the cassette deck finally gave up the ghost.

Paint Health Check

We are deep in The Peeling Era. By 1998, Mercury was using a two-stage base coat/clear coat system that looked a million bucks on the showroom floor, but had a nasty habit of "delaminating" once the sun got a few years of work in. If your Oxford White or Toreador Red looks like it's suffering from a bad sunburn, that's the clear coat losing its grip on the color underneath. This "Clear Coat Failure" usually starts on the horizontal surfaces-hood, roof, and trunk-where the UV rays bake the finish until the clear lifts off in brittle, translucent flakes.

Restoration Tip

The golden rule for 1998 steel is simple: Seal chips immediately before the clear lifts. In this era, a rock chip isn't just a cosmetic blemish; it's an invitation for air and moisture to get under the clear coat and start the peeling process. Once that clear starts to "bridge" or lift at the edges of a scratch, it'll travel across the panel faster than a Mountaineer on a downhill grade. Clean the area, dab your touch-up color, and make sure you've got a solid seal on those edges to keep the "peel" at bay.
