How to Find Your 1999 Mercury's Color Code

Mercury places the paint color code on the drivers door jamb. On the color plate, the code appears near EX PT (Exterior Paint), typically above or below; sometimes the actual color is embossed on the plate and not where expected. The typical format is WT/M6640, but the M6640 part is rarely used and often only WT appears. WT corresponds to Performance White Clearcoat. Pre 1970 Mercurys can be problematic due to same-name, different-color issues and different codes.

1999 Mercury Background Info

The 1999 Mercury Vibe

Welcome to the peak of the "New Edge" era, where Mercury was trying to decide if it was a luxury brand for your grandfather's Grand Marquis or a sporty play for the kids with the redesigned Cougar. It was a year of transitions, Y2K panic, and some of the most iconic forest greens to ever hit a suburban driveway. Our database covers the heavy hitters of '99-7 essential colors that defined the Mountaineer and Sable fleets. From the deep, rich Dark Toreador Red Pearl to the ubiquitous Spruce Green Metallic, we've focused on the shades that survived the turn of the millennium.

Paint Health Check

If you're looking at a 1999 Mercury today, you're dealing with the height of The Peeling Era. By the late '90s, the industry had fully committed to the basecoat/clearcoat system, but the chemistry hadn't quite perfected the "handshake" between the color and the clear. This era is notorious for delamination-that's the fancy word for your clear coat flaking off in sheets like a bad sunburn. On models like the Mystique or Tracer, the horizontal surfaces (hood, roof, and trunk) are likely fighting a losing battle against UV rays. Once that clear coat lifts and exposes the basecoat underneath, the pigment oxidizes faster than a cheap suit in a rainstorm.

Restoration Tip

In this era, a rock chip isn't just a cosmetic blemish; it's an entry point for disaster. When the seal of the clear coat is broken, moisture and air get underneath the "skin" and start the peeling process. Therefore, you must seal chips immediately. If you see a small nick on your Silver Frost Metallic fender, don't wait for the weekend. Clean it, dab it with color, and level it off. By sealing that edge, you're preventing the clear coat from catching the wind and lifting into a massive "peel island." When applying your touch-up, build your layers slowly-don't try to fill the crater in one go, or you'll end up with a blob that'll eventually pop off.
