Find Your Cadillac Color and Cadillac Paint Code
Cadillac did not make it easy to find the color code. Through the years, they have tried so many different locations, it often makes it impossible to ever find it. Plus, their paint code format is confusing. GM (parent company of Cadillac) make so many makes and models, you would think they would have standardized the location of the color plate. No such luck.
Usually when someone has trouble finding a Cadillac paint code, I have them look in the glove box or the spare tire well. If this doesn't work, then you start looking everywhere for it.
The typical color code format is:
51/WA316N
and this is usually preceded by BC/CC. So the above color would be BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N. You will notice our listings all have a WA in them because this is how they are listed in our color information. Also, there are really two codes in each color code to make it even more confusing. There can be eighteen different code 51's so then you have to use the 316N to identify the color. Also, these codes can be preceded by a U or L which correspond to Upper and Lower color. See below under two tone for more information.
Again, I ask...who was in charge of this??
which corresponds to Slate Gray Metallic Clearcoat.
Two Tone Combination
Cadillac has many two tone combinations for some cars. Two tones are two
different colors on your car. If your car has two colors, you will
see the two tone color code. Using the above example, the code could be
listed as:
BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N The U stands for Upper Color and the L stands for the Lower Color. Again, just a confusing way to present color information.
Same Color Code, Different Name
Cadillac, like all manufacturers, uses the exact same color across many
models and then will have a different color name for each model. It's the
same paint! This is why the color code is so important to order
the correct paint.
For example, 316N above we call Gold Mist Metallic Clearcoat It could also be called Gold Clearcoat, Inca Metallic Clearcoat, etc. depending on what the marketing department decided to call it.
How To Repair Damaged Cadillac Paint With Cadillac Touch Up Paint
By following these Cadillac paint repair directions, you can make your Cadillac paint shine again! For more detailed instructions, including how to use Cadillac spray paint, see our Directions for How To Apply Touch Up Paint.
1. Prepare Your Cadillac for Touch Up Paint
Make sure the temperature is over 50 degrees F, then wash the damaged paint on your Cadillac with soap and water. Use a wax and grease remover on the area. Placing masking tape around your scratched Cadillac paint will help protect the surrounding auto paint.
2. Repair Rusted Areas Before Applying Cadillac Touch Up Paint
Remove all traces of rust from your Cadillac with 220 grit sandpaper or a wire brush. Then use rust converter and apply it to the rusted area of your Cadillac.
3. Apply Primer Before Painting Your Cadillac
If you have an unpainted surface on your Cadillac, like bare metal or plastic, apply primer before Cadillac touch up paint! Apply several thin coats of primer to the Cadillac paint you are going to repair. Only apply a small amount of primer to your Cadillac at time. Let the primer dry, overnight if possible, before applying the Cadillac touch up paint. Once dry, lightly sand the primed Cadillac paint area with #220 grit sandpaper followed by #600 wet and dry sandpaper.
4. How to Apply Cadillac Touch Up Paint
You are now ready to apply Cadillac touch up paint to your car. Apply several thin coats of Cadillac touch up paint to build up the damaged paint area to the same depth as the surrounding surface. Let the Cadillac paint dry for ten to twenty minutes between coats. After the final coat, let the paint dry thoroughly before applying a clearcoat layer. Usually if you let the Cadillac paint dry overnight, it will be dry. If temperatures are below 70 degrees F, allow additional time for the Cadillac touch up paint to dry.
5. Protect Repaired Cadillac Paint with Clearcoat
Make sure the Cadillac touch up paint you applied earlier is dry. Apply several thin coats of clearcoat over the touched up Cadillac paint, drying for ten to twenty minutes between each coat. Let the clearcoat dry overnight, or longer if temperatures are less than 70 degrees F.
6. Use Rubbing Compound to Make Your Cadillac Paint Shine
Rubbing compound will help your Cadillac touch up paint repair become smooth and shiny like the original paint. Let the clearcoat dry for at least three days, then use rubbing compound on your Cadillac. Apply rubbing compound to your Cadillac paint with a clean, soft cloth like an old tee shirt, but not wood products like paper towels. Place a small quantity of rubbing compound on the area where you applied Cadillac touch up paint. Use circular strokes while applying even pressure to the surface. Buff with a clean cloth to a high gloss. For best Cadillac touch up paint results, let your Cadillac's finish dry for thirty days and then apply a good quality automotive wax.
