How to Find Your 1998 Cadillac's Color Code

Cadillac used many locations for paint codes, making them hard to find, often impossible. GM (parent company of Cadillac) did not standardize the plate location. Usually the code is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise it may be elsewhere. The typical format is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (e.g., BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N). There are two codes in one, and a U or L may precede for Upper or Lower. Two-tone examples: BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N.

1998 Cadillac Background Info

The 1998 Cadillac Vibe

Welcome to 1998, the year Cadillac tried to convince us that a rebranded Opel-the Catera-was the "Caddy that Zigs." While the marketing team was busy zigging, the factory was pumping out some of the most iconic luxury shades of the late nineties. Our database focuses on the three heavy hitters that defined the era: Black, White, and the high-maintenance royalty of the bunch, Red Pearl Tricoat. These weren't just colors; they were a statement that you'd officially "arrived," even if you were just pulling into a Blockbuster parking lot to return a copy of Titanic.

Paint Health Check

If you're looking at a '98 Cadillac today, you're likely staring at a survivor from The Peeling Era. By the late nineties, the industry had mastered the depth of the basecoat/clearcoat system, but the bond between them? That was more of a temporary arrangement than a blood oath. If your Caddy spent any time baking in the sun, you're probably seeing "delamination"-that lovely phenomenon where the clear coat starts flaking off in sheets like a bad sunburn. Once that clear starts to lift and turn milky, the party is over for the factory finish.

Restoration Tip

The secret to keeping a 1998 finish from looking like a topographical map of the moon is edge management. If you see a rock chip, seal it immediately. In this era of paint, once moisture and air get under the edge of a chip, they start "mining" their way under the clear coat, causing it to delaminate from the color coat. Clean the chip, dab your color, and if you're working with that Red Pearl Tricoat, remember to build your layers thin. Don't just blob it on-patience is the only thing that saves a pearl finish from looking like a DIY disaster.
