Your Paint Color Profile

55-1 (1965) - Black Plum Poly

The Look

Your 1965 Chrysler belongs to an era of serious, boardroom-ready sophistication. This specific shade was a one-year-only rarity that defines the mid-sixties luxury aesthetic. While it might look like a standard dark finish in the shade of your garage, the sun brings out a deep, bruised-purple glow that makes the lines of a Newport or a New Yorker look miles long. It is a subtle, high-class alternative to a standard black, offering a hidden depth that only reveals itself to those looking closely.

Technical Details

This is a metallic finish, which means the paint is loaded with tiny reflective particles. Because it is so dark, these flakes can be temperamental. If the paint is applied too heavily in one spot or if the flow isn't consistent, you might notice mottling-which looks like dark streaks or uneven "stripes" in the finish. This happens because the metallic flakes aren't settling evenly. To avoid this, focus on light, even coats rather than trying to cover the damage in one heavy pass.

Best Practices

Before you spray or dab Chrysler Black Plum Poly (check for code 55-1 (1965)), you need to shake it for 60 seconds. You will find your paint code on the metal fender tag located under the hood, usually on the driver's side inner fender or the firewall. Because those metallic flakes like to settle at the bottom, shaking the container is the most important step for a color match. Test the color on the included card first to see how the light hits those purple tones. When you are ready, keep the container moving at a steady pace to ensure the flakes distribute naturally across the surface. Let each layer sit for a full drying time before deciding if you need another coat.

How to Find Your Chrysler's Color Code

Chrysler paint codes can be difficult to find. In the good old days, they were on top of the radiator support, often hidden under engine grease and oil. Later models put them on the drivers door jamb. Typical format: BS/GBS, but only BS is the color code; it can also appear as QBS, PBS, TBS, etc., with the first letter as a confusing "Year Code." BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat; the G in GBS is not part of the color code.

Will absolutely order from this company again.

After ordering touch-up paint from Lexus I was still waiting for it a month later. If they'd told me upfront it would take that long I wouldn't have ordered in the first place. Paint Scratch was recommended by a friend who restores cars. Easy ordering, fair price and fast shipping. The color match is great especially considering my car is a 2012. Will absolutely order from this company again. Reason I chose this business: Lexus collision repair and a local collision repair. Will use paint less dent removal and touch up chipped paint myself. Reason I chose this product: Spouse sideswiped passenger side of car while backing out of garage. Mostly plastic transfer from his wheel well trim but pressure creased and cracked the paint causing a bare strip 1/8 wide x 4" long below door handle. Scratches on door handle and a few small chips on both doors.

Simply the best custom mixed paint in spray cans

Used Paint Scratch metallic custom mixed spray cans paint on a hood panel with excellent coverage and texture over the surface. Metallic paint can be very unforgiving out of a spray can, sputtering pigmentation dots on the panel being sprayed and thus ruining the paint job. No such issues with Paint Scratch custom mixed metallic paint spray cans. Paint sprayed strong and evenly till the last drop of paint in the can. Shipping time was faster than expected. Reason I chose this business: Having tried other brands of custom mixed metallic paint with terrible results, sputtering pigmentation tint dots from the spray nozzle in spite of vigorously shaking of can prior to application and loss of propellant rendering the lower fifth of the can's paint useless, Paint Scratch custom mixed metallic paint sprays out beautifully and strong all the way to the last gram of paint in the can. Simply the best custom mixed paint in spray cans for automotive restoration. Thank you Paint Scratch.
