Where to find Chrysler color code

Find Your 1988 Chrysler Paint Code

Chrysler paint codes can be difficult to find. In the good old days, they were on top of the radiator support, often hidden under engine grease and oil. Later models put them on the drivers door jamb. Typical format: BS/GBS, but only BS is the color code; it can also appear as QBS, PBS, TBS, etc., with the first letter as a confusing "Year Code." BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat; the G in GBS is not part of the color code.

1988 Chrysler Background Info

The 1988 Chrysler Vibe

1988 was the year Chrysler was leaning hard into the "Luxury for the Masses" aesthetic. You had the wood-paneled LeBaron Town & Country wagons ruling the suburbs and the New Yorker trying its best to look like a baby limousine. While the showroom brochures teased a full palette of metallics, we've focused our efforts on the undisputed survivor of the era: Bright White. It was the color of the executive fleet and the family Voyager alike-clean, crisp, and the only shade that truly stood the test of time while others faded into the 80s sunset.

Paint Health Check

Welcome to the heart of The Peeling Era. By 1988, the factory had fully committed to the new basecoat/clearcoat system, but let's just say the chemistry wasn't exactly "bulletproof" yet. If your Chrysler hasn't been hidden in a climate-controlled bunker since the Reagan administration, you're likely staring down the barrel of delamination. It starts as a tiny "sunburn" on the roof or trunk where the clear coat decides it's had enough of being attached to the primer. Once that bond fails, the clear lifts in flakes and sheets-a phenomenon we old-timers call "automotive dandruff."

Restoration Tip

On these late-80s finishes, a tiny stone chip is a ticking time bomb. It's not just about the rust; it's about the clear coat losing its "anchor." Seal those chips the second you see them. Don't wait for the weekend. Use a precision touch-up to bridge the gap between the clear coat and the base layer. If you can keep the air and moisture from getting under that top layer, you'll stop the delamination crawl before your hood starts peeling like a birch tree in autumn.
