BMW didn't just pick a palette for the X6; they basically threw the entire paint library at it. With 71 recorded colors, they really went for it. You've got the corporate classics like Alpine White III and Carbon Black Metallic, but then someone in Munich clearly had a wild weekend and gave us Isle of Man Green Metallic and Manhattan Metallic. Whether your X6 looks like it's headed to a board meeting or a desert safari, there is a lot of specialized pigment sitting on that metal.

What to Watch For

Before you start, you need your "secret sauce" recipe (the paint code). On the X6, you'll usually find it on a black sticker located on the driver's side door jamb (the B-pillar). If it's not there, pop the hood and check the strut towers.

In terms of wear, the X6 has a bit of a "tough guy" stance that works against it. Because of those wide fenders and massive wheels, the lower doors are notorious for catching "road rash" from gravel. Also, keep a close eye on the paint edge right above the windshield; because of the way the gasket is designed, that area is prone to tiny chips that can lead to flaking if not nipped in the bud.

Driveway Repair Tip

Since BMW loves their pearls and metallics (looking at you, Black Sapphire Metallic), those tiny flakes like to settle at the bottom of the bottle. Shake your touch-up pen for a full two minutes-longer than you think you need to. If you don't, the color might look too flat.

When applying, don't try to fill a deep chip in one go. Use the tip of the brush to "dab" a tiny amount into the center of the chip and let it flow to the edges. It's much better to do two thin layers than one big glob that looks like a grape stuck to your hood. Patience is your best friend here!
