Merkur Background Info

About Merkur Paint

Merkur cars were high-quality imports from Germany sold during the late 1980s. Because they were built for European roads, the paint was tougher than many American cars of that era. While the metallic colors like Moonstone Blue usually have a protective clear coat, some older solid colors like Diamond White might not have a clear top layer, which means they can fade if left in the sun too long.

Application Tips

This paint is very friendly to work with and flows out smoothly for a level finish. Since these cars are now older classics, the original paint might be a bit dry or thin from years of washing and polishing. Always start with a very light "tack coat" to help the new paint grab onto the old surface without sliding or peeling.

Quick Summary

  • Paint Feel: Medium-Hard. It is tough enough to resist small scratches, but it takes a little more patience when you are sanding it down for a repair.
  • Best Advice: Since there are 30 different colors used across the 3 Merkur models, like the Scorpio and XR4Ti, always double-check your paint code on the car before starting.
  • Pro Tip: Wait 10 minutes between each coat of paint to let it dry just enough so you don't get any drips or runs.
