How to Find Your 2009 Ford's Color Code

Ford paint color codes are on the drivers door jamb, on the color plate. The typical format is PM/M6599, though usually only PM appears. Example: PM corresponds to Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat PM/M6599; it may appear as PM Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat. Plates may show Exterior Paint Colors or EX PT; sometimes the color is embossed mid-plate. WB is wheelbase; above Wheel Base is EXT PNT, and to the right of EXT PNT is the code. Many mistake LX3 as the code.

2009 Ford Background Info

The 2009 Ford Vibe

2009 was a wild year in Dearborn. While everyone else was standing in line for bailouts, Ford was busy throwing everything at the wall to see what stuck. You had the boxy, "refrigerator-chic" Flex making its debut, the Mustang getting its last retro-heavy facelift, and the F-Series continuing to carry the entire weight of the American economy. Our database counts a staggering 71 colors for this year-it's like the factory paint mixers were told they couldn't go home until they'd used every pigment known to man. We're talking high-depth icons like Tuxedo Black (with those unmistakable glass flakes) and Blue Flame Metallic. It was a time of "maximum variety" for the consumer, even if the economy was doing its best impression of a lead balloon.

Paint Health Check

Welcome to the Thin Paint Era. By 2009, Ford's paint-shop robots had been programmed to be "lean," which is just a fancy industry term for "stingy." The factory clear coats on a Fusion or Edge are technically advanced, but they're applied with the thickness of a postage stamp. If you've got a Mustang or an Expedition, look closely at the leading edge of the hood. Ford started using more aluminum panels to save weight, but they hadn't quite mastered the chemistry between the primer and the metal. The result? You'll often see "bubbling" or "blistering" where the paint is literally lifting off the aluminum because of iron contamination at the factory. These aren't just chips; it's a structural divorce between the color and the car.

Restoration Tip

Because 2009 paint is remarkably thin, the biggest mistake you can make is "blobbing" your touch-up. These modern basecoat/clearcoat finishes don't have the "build" of the old-school lacquers. If you drop a giant bead of paint into a chip on your F-150, it will stand out like a mountain on a flat plain. Therefore, build your layers slowly. Use a micro-applicator to apply the color in thin, translucent passes. Let it dry, then add another. You want to bring the level of the repair up to just *below* the surrounding surface before you hit it with the clear coat. Think of it as 3D printing a repair rather than spackling a hole. And if you're dealing with those aluminum hood bubbles, you've got to sand it down to the bright metal first-if you don't kill the corrosion, it'll just eat your new paint from the inside out.
