What to Watch For

Modern BMWs are known for having "soft" clear coats. While this makes for a mirror-like shine on the showroom floor, it means your i5's nose is basically a magnet for every loose pebble on the highway. If you're hunting for your paint code to start a repair, check the driver-side door jamb (the B-pillar). You're looking for a three-digit code on a black sticker. Keep an eye on those "Frozen" matte finishes like Frozen Deep Grey; they are stunning but sensitive. Because they don't have a traditional glossy clear coat, they require a very light touch to avoid creating a shiny spot where you meant to have a stealthy matte finish.

Driveway Repair Tip

Before you touch that chip, shake your paint bottle for at least two full minutes-not thirty seconds-to wake up the metallic flakes that have settled at the bottom. For tiny rock chips, ditch the chunky brush that comes in the cap. Instead, use the tip of a wooden toothpick to "drip" the paint into the center of the chip. It will flow out to the edges on its own. If you're working with a "Frozen" matte color, remember: apply, don't rub. Any friction will turn that matte finish into a permanent shiny patch, so just dab it and let it be.
