BMW clearly couldn't decide on a favorite, recording a staggering 93 different colors for the X5. Whether your X5 looks like it's headed to a board meeting or a muddy trailhead, BMW has a shade for it. With nearly 100 options, it's less of a color palette and more of a "choose your own adventure" novel written in German engineering.

What to Watch For

Before you get to work, check the driver's side door jamb. You're looking for a black sticker with a three-digit code (sometimes followed by a slash)-that's your DNA sequence. Now, keep a close eye on the area right above your windshield and along the front of the hood. The X5 is a bit of a "highway magnet" for rock chips, and on some older models, the clear coat near that top windshield seal can start to lift if it's spent too much time in the sun. If you see a tiny flake starting to peel, don't panic; it's just the car's way of asking for a little attention.

Driveway Repair Tip

When using your touch-up pen or brush, remember that many of these BMW colors-especially the "Pearls" and "Metallics"-have a lot of heavy lifting to do in the sparkle department. Give that bottle a vigorous shake for a full 60 seconds to wake up the metallic flakes so they don't all sit at the bottom. When you apply the paint, think "less is more." Use the tip of the brush to drop a tiny bead of paint into the center of the chip and let it spread out to the edges on its own. It requires a little patience, but building it up in two thin layers looks much better than one giant, gloopy mountain.
