Your Paint Color Profile

P23 - Phoenix Red Metallic

The Look

This is the heartbeat of the Lancer Evolution IX. It is an aggressive, high-energy red that defined the peak of the rally-inspired tuner era. Whether it is on a weekend warrior or a daily-driven Outlander, this color carries a heavy weight of history. Since your Mitsubishi has been braving the sun since the mid-2000s, you should expect some natural UV fade. Red pigments are notorious for losing their punch over time, so your fresh paint may look slightly more vibrant than the aged panels currently on your car.

Technical Details

While the name suggests a heavy sparkle, the metallic flake here is exceptionally fine. It is designed to give the red depth and a "glow" rather than a gritty, glittery texture. This fine flake can be tricky because the heavy pigments like to settle at the bottom of the container. If they aren't fully mixed, the color will look thin and lack the richness of the original factory finish. Red is also a naturally transparent color, so you will need to rely on multiple light layers to build up the correct "weight" and hide any repairs beneath.

Best Practices

You will find your identification plate on the firewall at the back of the engine bay or tucked inside the passenger door jamb. Before you spray or dab Mitsubishi Phoenix Red Metallic (check for code P23), you need to shake it for 60 seconds. This is the only way to get those fine flakes into the flow of the paint. Test the color on the included card to see how it reacts with your car's current level of fade. When you begin the repair, keep the container moving in steady, overlapping passes. Give each layer enough drying time to set so you don't end up with sags or dark spots.

How to Find Your Mitsubishi's Color Code

Mitsubishi paint codes are on a tag in the firewall area of the car, not on an exterior panel. The color code sits at the bottom mid-left part of that tag. Codes include letters, dashes, and numbers. The code R71 corresponds to Passion Red Clearcoat. R71 may be called Passion Red Clearcoat on some models. R71 may be called Red Clearcoat or Speed Red Clearcoat on others. Model marketing names can vary even for the same code.

Will absolutely order from this company again.

After ordering touch-up paint from Lexus I was still waiting for it a month later. If they'd told me upfront it would take that long I wouldn't have ordered in the first place. Paint Scratch was recommended by a friend who restores cars. Easy ordering, fair price and fast shipping. The color match is great especially considering my car is a 2012. Will absolutely order from this company again. Reason I chose this business: Lexus collision repair and a local collision repair. Will use paint less dent removal and touch up chipped paint myself. Reason I chose this product: Spouse sideswiped passenger side of car while backing out of garage. Mostly plastic transfer from his wheel well trim but pressure creased and cracked the paint causing a bare strip 1/8 wide x 4" long below door handle. Scratches on door handle and a few small chips on both doors.

Simply the best custom mixed paint in spray cans

Used Paint Scratch metallic custom mixed spray cans paint on a hood panel with excellent coverage and texture over the surface. Metallic paint can be very unforgiving out of a spray can, sputtering pigmentation dots on the panel being sprayed and thus ruining the paint job. No such issues with Paint Scratch custom mixed metallic paint spray cans. Paint sprayed strong and evenly till the last drop of paint in the can. Shipping time was faster than expected. Reason I chose this business: Having tried other brands of custom mixed metallic paint with terrible results, sputtering pigmentation tint dots from the spray nozzle in spite of vigorously shaking of can prior to application and loss of propellant rendering the lower fifth of the can's paint useless, Paint Scratch custom mixed metallic paint sprays out beautifully and strong all the way to the last gram of paint in the can. Simply the best custom mixed paint in spray cans for automotive restoration. Thank you Paint Scratch.
