Your Paint Color Profile

HY5/DV - Sand

The Look

This shade is the quintessential desert tan of the late AMC era. It was born during the transition into the early nineties, appearing on every rugged box in the fleet from the YJ Wrangler to the XJ Cherokee. It is not trying to be flashy or modern; it is a utilitarian earth tone that looks better with a layer of trail dust on it than it does sitting in a showroom. Since your Jeep has survived over three decades, the original finish has likely warmed up or faded under the sun, making this repair a necessary part of keeping that vintage off-road character alive.

Technical Details

You are working with a solid finish. This is great news for a DIY repair because you do not have to worry about metallic flakes settling unevenly or changing shade depending on the angle of the light. Solid beige is forgiving, but it can be deceptive. If you apply it too thick in one spot, you will see a visible ridge that catches the light. The goal is to build the color gradually so it sits flush with the original surface.

Best Practices

You can find your paint information on a metal plate riveted to the firewall inside the engine bay-usually near the brake booster-or on a sticker inside the driver's door jamb. Before you spray or dab Jeep Sand (check for code HY5/DV), you need to shake it for a full minute to get the heavy beige pigments moving. Test the color on the included card before touching the vehicle to ensure the match is right for your paint's current age. Keep the container moving to prevent the paint from pooling, and always work in a garage or the shade to keep the metal cool. Give each layer enough drying time so the finish stays flat and smooth.

How to Find Your Jeep's Color Code

Jeep codes are difficult to find. In the good old days, they hid them on top of the radiator support, under engine grease and oil. Later models put them on the drivers door jamb. Typical format: BS/GBS; only BS is the color code (also QBS, PBS, TBS, etc.). The first letter is a "Year Code". BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat; the G in GBS is not part of the color code. Lately, Jeep lists just BS.

Will absolutely order from this company again.

After ordering touch-up paint from Lexus I was still waiting for it a month later. If they'd told me upfront it would take that long I wouldn't have ordered in the first place. Paint Scratch was recommended by a friend who restores cars. Easy ordering, fair price and fast shipping. The color match is great especially considering my car is a 2012. Will absolutely order from this company again. Reason I chose this business: Lexus collision repair and a local collision repair. Will use paint less dent removal and touch up chipped paint myself. Reason I chose this product: Spouse sideswiped passenger side of car while backing out of garage. Mostly plastic transfer from his wheel well trim but pressure creased and cracked the paint causing a bare strip 1/8 wide x 4" long below door handle. Scratches on door handle and a few small chips on both doors.

Simply the best custom mixed paint in spray cans

Used Paint Scratch metallic custom mixed spray cans paint on a hood panel with excellent coverage and texture over the surface. Metallic paint can be very unforgiving out of a spray can, sputtering pigmentation dots on the panel being sprayed and thus ruining the paint job. No such issues with Paint Scratch custom mixed metallic paint spray cans. Paint sprayed strong and evenly till the last drop of paint in the can. Shipping time was faster than expected. Reason I chose this business: Having tried other brands of custom mixed metallic paint with terrible results, sputtering pigmentation tint dots from the spray nozzle in spite of vigorously shaking of can prior to application and loss of propellant rendering the lower fifth of the can's paint useless, Paint Scratch custom mixed metallic paint sprays out beautifully and strong all the way to the last gram of paint in the can. Simply the best custom mixed paint in spray cans for automotive restoration. Thank you Paint Scratch.
