About Sterling Paint

Sterling cars were built in the late 1980s and early 1990s as a mix of British style and Japanese engineering. Most of these models come with a clearcoat finish, but because of their age, the paint can be a bit delicate or prone to fading. Many of these cars featured a classic "two-tone" look with a different color on the bottom panels, often a dark gunmetal gray.

Application Tips

When you fix a scratch on a Sterling, the paint usually flows on very smoothly, but you have to be patient. It is best to apply several thin layers rather than one thick one to avoid drips and runs. If you are using a spray can, keep your hand moving in steady, even strokes to get that factory-fresh look.

Quick Summary

  • Paint Feel: Soft to Medium. This means it is easy to polish by hand, but you should be gentle so you don't rub through the thin clearcoat.
  • Best Advice: Always check if your car has the gray lower trim before ordering, as many Sterling models used two different colors on the body.
  • Pro Tip: After you finish painting, wait at least 30 days before applying any wax so the new paint can fully "breathe" and harden.
