2002 Saab Background Info
The 2002 Saab Vibe
Welcome to 2002, where the Saab 9-3 and 9-5 were the thinking person's alternative to the sea of German sedans. This was the year of "Silver is the new everything"-nearly a third of all cars leaving factories were some variation of metallic gray or silver. For the 2002 Saab, we've focused our collection on the true survivors of that era. Whether it was the "architect's choice" of Steel Gray Metallic, the classic Silver Metallic, or the bold Laser Red found on the higher-trim Aeros, these colors defined the Scandinavian aesthetic of the new millennium.
Paint Health Check
If you're driving a 2002 Saab today, you're officially in the "Peeling Era." By this point, factory paint tech had moved fully into basecoat/clearcoat systems, but the durability hadn't quite caught up to the Swedish winters or the Arizona sun. The most common heartbreak for these models is delamination. You'll see it first on the hood, the roof, and the tops of the bumpers-the clear coat starts to lift like a bad sunburn, leaving the basecoat underneath exposed and vulnerable. Once that clear coat is gone, Laser Red turns to a chalky pink faster than a turbo can spool, and the metallic flakes in your Steel Gray will lose their luster as they oxidize in the open air.
Restoration Tip
The key to saving a 2002 finish is aggression-specifically, aggressive early intervention. If you see a small stone chip, seal it immediately; that chip is the "doorway" where moisture and air get under the clear coat and start the peeling process. If the clear has already started to flake, don't just paint over it. You need to carefully sand back the "halo" of the peeling edge until you reach a spot where the clear is still firmly bonded to the base. Use our solvent-based kits to build up the layers, and remember: with these older Saabs, multiple thin coats of clear will always beat one heavy "glob" when you're trying to hide an edge.
