Once a chip pierces that clear coat, moisture and air start a slow-motion divorce between the color and the protective top layer. If you see the edges of a chip starting to look white or flaky, that's the clear coat losing its grip. Left alone, it'll peel back like an old sunburn.

The golden rule for 2001 paint is simple: Seal chips immediately before the clear lifts. If you spot a nick on that low-slung hood, don't wait for the next car show to fix it.
