What to Watch For

If your Pontiac was born in the 80s or 90s, it might be dealing with what I call the "GM Sunburn"-that's when the clear coat starts to peel or flake off on the hood and roof. If you see those white, flaky edges, don't panic; just catch the chips early before they spread.

Finding your paint code is your first DIY mission. You're looking for the Service Parts Identification (SPID) sticker. It's a bit of a scavenger hunt: check the inside of the glove box door first. If it's not there, head to the trunk and look on the underside of the lid or the spare tire cover. On a Firebird, it might even be hiding on the door jamb or inside the center console. Look for a code starting with "WA" or "U" (like WA8554). That's your golden ticket to a perfect match.

Driveway Repair Tip

A huge portion of Pontiac's library consists of "Metallic," "Poly," or "Irid" (Iridescent) colors. These paints are packed with tiny flakes that give the car its shimmer, but those flakes are heavy and love to sink to the bottom of your touch-up bottle.

The Pro Tip: Shake your touch-up pen or bottle for at least two full minutes. I'm talking "maraca-solo" levels of shaking. If you don't wake up those metallic flakes, your repair will look flat and dark compared to the rest of the car. When you apply it, use three very thin layers rather than one big glob. This lets the sparkles sit evenly so they catch the sun just like the original factory finish.
