It starts as a tiny white bubble or a chip, and before you know it, the roof looks like a map of the moon. Once the clear lifts and air gets underneath, the basecoat underneath starts to oxidize and turn chalky. It's a race against time, and usually, the sun is winning.

Restoration Tip

In this era, your motto has to be: Seal it or lose it. Because these clear coats are prone to lifting, you cannot leave a rock chip exposed. If you see a nick in your Bright Red or Dark Ming Blue, don't wait for the weekend. Clean it and seal it immediately with a touch-up pen or a light dab of clear. This keeps moisture and air from creeping between the layers and starting the peeling process. If the clear has already started to flake at the edges, you can carefully feather the edges with high-grit sandpaper before applying a fresh coat, but remember-the goal is to stop the "creep" before your hood looks like it's shedding its skin.
