In 1994, the industry was still perfecting the bond between the base color and the clear coat, and Plymouth (along with the rest of the Chrysler family) was right in the splash zone. If you're looking at your roof or hood and seeing what looks like a bad sunburn where the clear is flaking off in translucent sheets, you're dealing with delamination. Back then, the UV inhibitors in the clear coat would often give up the ghost, leaving the basecoat exposed to the elements. Once that clear lifts, the pigment underneath turns chalky and vulnerable faster than you can say "Neon."

The secret to keeping a 1994 finish alive is immediate intervention. Because these clear coats are prone to "lifting" once they're compromised, you cannot leave a rock chip open to the air. Moisture will crawl under the edge of the clear coat and begin to separate it from the Black Crystal base. Use a fine-tipped applicator to seal those chips the moment you see them. If you're still sporting the original factory shine, stay away from aggressive "cleaner waxes" that use heavy abrasives; you've only got a few mils of clear coat left after thirty years, so treat it with a gentle hand and a high-quality sealant to keep the UV rays from eating your hard work.
