Find Your Mercury Mystique Paint Code

Mercury places the paint color code on the drivers door jamb. On the color plate, the code appears near EX PT (Exterior Paint), typically above or below; sometimes the actual color is embossed on the plate and not where expected. The typical format is WT/M6640, but the M6640 part is rarely used and often only WT appears. WT corresponds to Performance White Clearcoat. Pre 1970 Mercurys can be problematic due to same-name, different-color issues and different codes.

The Color Breakdown

The Mercury Mystique might have been a compact car, but it had a massive personality when it came to the paint shop. Mercury recorded a staggering 32 colors for this model, ranging from the eye-popping Chrome Yellow to the deeply sophisticated Spruce Green Metallic. They really leaned into the late-90s aesthetic-if it wasn't a rich metallic green, it was likely a desert-inspired shade like Harvest Gold. It's a diverse palette that proves they weren't afraid to give this sedan some flash.

What to Watch For

Before you start your repair, pop open the driver's side door and look at the jamb. You're looking for a sticker with a two-digit code (like "UA" or "FL") usually located right above the words "Exterior Paint Codes." In terms of aging, the Mystique often suffers from what I call the "90s Sunburn." Because of the era's paint formulas, the clear coat on flat surfaces like the hood and roof tends to get a bit cloudy or start peeling back. You'll also want to check the edges of the bumpers; the paint there likes to flake away if it's been bumped or bruised over the years.

Driveway Repair Tip

Since so many Mystique colors are high-flake metallics or pearls-think Silver Frost or Toreador Red Pearl-your best friend is a vigorous arm workout. Shake that touch-up bottle for a full 60 seconds after you hear the mixing ball start to rattle. This ensures the tiny metallic flakes are suspended evenly so the color doesn't look too dark or "flat" when it hits the car. When applying, think of it like nail polish: use the tip of the brush to dab the paint into the center of the chip and let it flow to the edges. Light layers are the secret to success!
