Welcome back to 2005, old son. Gas was hovering around two bucks, "Mr. Brightside" was played until the tapes wore out, and if you were out on the water, you were likely doing it in a Lund Pro-V or an Explorer. We've got 14 colors in the vault for this year-a regular buffet of mid-2000s glory. Whether you were rocking the high-shine Cobalt Blue Metallic or the "I-mean-business" Graphite Gray, Lund wasn't shy about variety. This was the peak of the "Silver Era," where everyone wanted a boat that matched their Pewter or Quick Silver truck. It was a clean, high-gloss world-at least, it was when it left the showroom.

Now, listen close, because 2005 sits right at the tail end of what I call **The Peeling Era**. By this time, the industry had mastered the look of the basecoat-clearcoat system, but the UV resistance wasn't always a match for a decade of sun-baked afternoons. If your Wildfire Red or Red Reef looks like it has a white, hazy "sunburn" on the top edges, you're looking at the early stages of delamination. That clear coat is starting to give up the ghost. Once it starts to lift and flake away in silver-dollar-sized chunks, the base color underneath is defenseless. It'll go from a deep metallic to a chalky mess faster than you can bait a hook.

Restoration Tip

The secret to keeping a 2005 finish alive is catching the "lift" before it travels. If you see a rock chip or a dock scrape, don't just "keep an eye on it." Air and moisture love to get between that clear coat and the base color; once they do, they'll peel that finish back like an orange. Clean the area with a good solvent, and seal those chips immediately with a fresh coat of color and a dab of clear. If you're seeing that hazy oxidation but the clear hasn't flaked yet, give it a light polish and a heavy sealant. You've gotta keep the oxygen out, or that Sand Beach tan is going to turn into a white, flaking nightmare.
