Welcome to the era of Y2K "high-tech" aesthetics and the peak of the Silver Age. In 2002, Ford was obsessed with looking futuristic, churning out a staggering 40 different shades-though if you look at any parking lot from that year, you'd swear they only made five. Whether it was a Mustang in Sonic Blue Pearl or a massive Excursion taking up three zip codes in Arizona Beige Metallic, the goal was metallic depth and a "liquid metal" finish. This was also the year of the Thunderbird revival and the F-Series dominance, where colors like Silver Birch and Mineral Gray reigned supreme because they were the only ones that could hide a week's worth of road salt and still look "premium" at the Saturday car wash.

We are deep in the Peeling Era here, folks. By 2002, Ford had mastered the "look" of a deep clear coat, but the bond between that shiny top layer and the color beneath was sometimes as thin as a used car salesman's promise. If you're looking at your Explorer or Ranger and seeing white, flaky "sunburn" patches on the hood or roof, you've got classic delamination. Once the UV rays punch through that clear, it loses its grip and starts lifting in sheets. It's a chemical heartbreak; the color underneath (the basecoat) is suddenly exposed to the elements without its shield, and it'll turn chalky and dull faster than you can say "Taurus."

Restoration Tip

The golden rule for 2002 Ford steel: Seal the chips before the clear lifts. If you spot a small rock chip on the leading edge of your Focus or Expedition, don't wait for the weekend. If moisture and air get under the edge of that clear coat, it will start to "bridge" and peel away from the base. When repairing, you've got to feather-edge the failing clear coat until you hit a spot where it's still firmly stuck. If you just spray over a loose edge, your new paint will just act like a sail and pull the old stuff right off. And since we're dealing with high-metallic 2002 favorites like Silver Metallic or Estate Green, remember to use light, even passes-don't "hose" it on, or those metallic flakes will settle like lead and leave you with dark, blotchy splotches.
