How to Find Your 1996 Ford's Color Code

Ford paint color codes are on the drivers door jamb, on the color plate. The typical format is PM/M6599, though usually only PM appears. Example: PM corresponds to Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat PM/M6599; it may appear as PM Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat. Plates may show Exterior Paint Colors or EX PT; sometimes the color is embossed mid-plate. WB is wheelbase; above Wheel Base is EXT PNT, and to the right of EXT PNT is the code. Many mistake LX3 as the code.

1996 Ford Background Info

The 1996 Ford Vibe

Welcome to 1996-the year the Explorer officially conquered the American driveway and the Bronco took its final, legendary bow. Ford was feeling experimental with the palette, and our database shows 14 distinct survivors from that year. It was a time of "Mall-Crawler Teals" like Seafoam Green Metallic and Cayman Metallic, mixed with the business-casual look of Silver Frost Metallic and Medium Platinum. Whether you were hauling the kids in a Windstar or hitting the job site in an F-Series, you were likely draped in a metallic that looked deep enough to swim in-at least for the first five years.

Paint Health Check

We're firmly in The Peeling Era here. By 1996, the factory had fully embraced the basecoat/clearcoat system, but they hadn't quite mastered the "staying attached" part. This was the peak of the "Ford Flake." If you're looking at a 1996 Ranger or Econoline today, you're likely seeing delamination-where the clear coat decides it's had enough and starts to peel off in giant, crispy sheets. This usually starts on the hood or roof where the sun cooks the Toreador Red Pearl or Indigo Blue until the bond between the color and the clear just gives up. If your Oxford White looks like it's shedding its skin, that's not just age; it's a classic mid-90s chemistry break-up.

Restoration Tip

The secret to keeping a '96 Ford looking decent is "the zipper effect." Once a rock chip pierces that clear coat, moisture and air get underneath and start "zippering" the clear away from the paint. Seal your chips immediately. Don't wait until the weekend. If you see a silver-dollar-sized patch of peeling clear, you've already lost the battle for that panel. Use a high-quality solvent-based touch-up to seal the edges of any damage. This creates a mechanical bond that stops the delamination in its tracks before your Deep Berry Metallic turns into a patchy mess of dull primer.
