If you're looking at a 1995 Ford today, you're likely staring at the poster child for "The Peeling Era." By the mid-90s, the industry had fully committed to the basecoat/clearcoat system, but the chemistry hadn't quite perfected the bond between the two. This is the era of delamination. If your Explorer or F150 spent its life under the sun, you've probably seen the clear coat starting to flake off the hood or roof like a bad case of sunburn. Once that UV protection in the clear fails, the base color underneath-especially those deep Dark Berry and Royal Blue metallics-will turn chalky and start to lift in sheets.

Restoration Tip

When you're dealing with a '95, you have to be a surgeon with your touch-up. Because these clear coats are prone to "zippering" (where a tiny chip turns into a massive peel), you need to seal every stone chip immediately. Don't wait for the weekend. If you see a nick in that Silver Frost or Seafoam Green, get some paint on it to lock the edges of the clear coat down to the primer. This stops moisture from getting under the clear and freezing or bubbling, which is what usually starts the dreaded delamination process. A little preventative dabbing today saves you a full-body respray tomorrow.
