Your Paint Color Profile

5493 - Medium Steel Blue

The Look

This is the blue of a long workday. Originally developed for heavy-duty commercial use between 1966 and 2000, this color communicates reliability and quiet professionalism. It is a stoic, mid-tone shade that balances gray undertones to stay grounded. Because your vehicle has likely spent years in the sun or on a job site, the original finish has probably matured. This blue hides road grime much better than a standard white, but it will still show the history of its life on the road if you do not blend your repair into the surrounding panels.

Technical Details

This particular shade is a solid finish, meaning it does not rely on metallic flakes or pearls to create its depth. The benefit here is a much simpler application process and an easier path to a consistent look across the repair area. The risk is that solid colors are unforgiving when it comes to surface preparation. Since there is no metallic sparkle to distract the eye, any dust or stray hair on the surface will stand out against the pigment. Success depends entirely on a clean, level surface in your garage.

Best Practices

You can usually find your paint identification plate on the driver side door jamb or sometimes tucked inside the glove box. Before you apply Fleet Medium Steel Blue (code 5493), shake the container for at least a full minute to ensure the heavy pigments are fully suspended. Always test the color on the included card to check the match against your current paint age. When applying, keep the container moving to avoid puddles and maintain a consistent flow from the nozzle or brush. Give the area enough drying time between layers to prevent the blue from sagging or running.

How to Find Your Fleet's Color Code

Fleet is the catch all for individual color codes not associated with any brand or make, full of PPG, Axalta, Sherwin Williams, etc. If only a color code for something to be painted is available, the site can be checked; if it cannot be found, they can be notified and they will see if they can make the paint.

Will absolutely order from this company again.

After ordering touch-up paint from Lexus I was still waiting for it a month later. If they'd told me upfront it would take that long I wouldn't have ordered in the first place. Paint Scratch was recommended by a friend who restores cars. Easy ordering, fair price and fast shipping. The color match is great especially considering my car is a 2012. Will absolutely order from this company again. Reason I chose this business: Lexus collision repair and a local collision repair. Will use paint less dent removal and touch up chipped paint myself. Reason I chose this product: Spouse sideswiped passenger side of car while backing out of garage. Mostly plastic transfer from his wheel well trim but pressure creased and cracked the paint causing a bare strip 1/8 wide x 4" long below door handle. Scratches on door handle and a few small chips on both doors.

Simply the best custom mixed paint in spray cans

Used Paint Scratch metallic custom mixed spray cans paint on a hood panel with excellent coverage and texture over the surface. Metallic paint can be very unforgiving out of a spray can, sputtering pigmentation dots on the panel being sprayed and thus ruining the paint job. No such issues with Paint Scratch custom mixed metallic paint spray cans. Paint sprayed strong and evenly till the last drop of paint in the can. Shipping time was faster than expected. Reason I chose this business: Having tried other brands of custom mixed metallic paint with terrible results, sputtering pigmentation tint dots from the spray nozzle in spite of vigorously shaking of can prior to application and loss of propellant rendering the lower fifth of the can's paint useless, Paint Scratch custom mixed metallic paint sprays out beautifully and strong all the way to the last gram of paint in the can. Simply the best custom mixed paint in spray cans for automotive restoration. Thank you Paint Scratch.
