How to Find Your 1990 Dodge's Color Code

Older Dodge paint codes were placed on top of the radiator support, often obscured by engine grease and oil. Later models list them on the drivers door jamb. The typical format is BS/GBS, but only BS is the color code; it can also appear as QBS, PBS, TBS with the first letter as a confusing Year Code. The G in GBS is not part of the color code. BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat; lately codes are simply listed as BS.

1990 Dodge Background Info

The 1990 Dodge Vibe

1990 was the year Dodge really leaned into its identity as the backbone of the American driveway. You had the Ramcharger still holding down the fort for the old-school SUV crowd, the Dakota proving that mid-sized trucks weren't just a phase, and the Caravan-the undisputed king of the suburban cul-de-sac. In our database, we've dialed in the two colors that defined the era's high-contrast look: Black and Bright White. These weren't just paint options; they were the "uniform" for every Ram Pickup and Ram Van that actually did a day's work. While the catalogs might have teased flashy teals, these are the survivors that still look sharp on a restored tailgate today.

Paint Health Check

Welcome to the heart of the "Peeling Era." By 1990, the industry had fully committed to the basecoat/clearcoat system, but the chemistry hadn't quite caught up to the Florida sun. If you're looking at a 1990 Vista Wagon or Colt with original paint, you're likely dealing with "delamination"-that lovely phenomenon where the clear coat decides it's had enough and starts flaking off in sheets like automotive dandruff. Because the UV blockers in those early 90s formulas eventually give up the ghost, the clear coat loses its grip on the color underneath, leaving your Bright White looking chalky and unprotected.

Restoration Tip

When you're dealing with 1990 clear coat technology, "good enough" is an invitation for disaster. Since this era is prone to delamination, you must seal every rock chip or scratch the second you see it. If oxygen and moisture get under the edge of that clear coat, it will start to lift and spread like a bad habit. Clean the area thoroughly, apply your color, and-most importantly-ensure you're capping it with a quality clear to pin down those edges. If the clear coat is already flaking, you'll need to feather those edges back with a fine grit before touching up, or you're just painting over a house of cards.
