If you're looking at original 1983 paint, you aren't looking at a peeling clear coat-you're looking at a chalkboard. We're in the Single Stage Era here. Over forty years, the sun has literally cooked the oils out of that paint, leaving a hazy, chalky film on the surface. Restoration Tip

Here's the deal with 1983 enamel: It needs wax or it dies. If you're trying to save the original finish, you've got to gently buff away that oxidized "dead" layer to find the fresh color underneath. But don't get too aggressive with a high-speed polisher or you'll burn right through to the primer in seconds. Once you get that Charcoal Pearl Metallic shining again, you have to seal it immediately. Without a high-quality wax or sealant, those open pores in the paint will soak up moisture and oxygen, and you'll be back to a chalky mess before the next oil change.
