How to Find Your 1977 Dodge's Color Code

Older Dodge paint codes were placed on top of the radiator support, often obscured by engine grease and oil. Later models list them on the drivers door jamb. The typical format is BS/GBS, but only BS is the color code; it can also appear as QBS, PBS, TBS with the first letter as a confusing Year Code. The G in GBS is not part of the color code. BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat; lately codes are simply listed as BS.

1977 Dodge Background Info

The 1977 Dodge Vibe

Welcome to 1977, where the wheelbases were shrinking but the color options were still larger than life. This was the year of the Dodge Aspen, the Monaco, and the "Malaise Era" personal luxury cruisers that defined the decade. Our database shows 29 different colors for this year-a literal buffet of earth tones and "Sunfire" metallics. From the deeply caffeinated look of Coffee Sunfire Metallic to the unapologetic punch of Spitfire Orange, Dodge was giving you plenty of ways to stand out in the disco line. Whether you were rocking a Harvest Gold wagon or a French Racing Blue coupe, the 1977 palette was all about choosing a personality and sticking to it.

Paint Health Check

Since we're dealing with the Single Stage Era, your 1977 Dodge didn't come with a clear coat to hide behind. Back then, the color was the protection. Chrysler used a thermo-plastic acrylic enamel that was tough as nails when it left the factory, but it had one major enemy: the sun. If your Dodge has been sitting out, you're likely looking at heavy "Oxidation." That's that chalky, milky white haze that makes your Inca Gold Poly look like a dusty basement floor. The pigments in these old enamels are porous; once the surface oils dry out, the paint literally starts to die from the top down, turning your metallic shine into a matte disaster.

Restoration Tip

If you're seeing that chalky fade, don't panic-there's usually good color hiding underneath that "dead" layer. Because this is single-stage paint, you can often buff the oxidation away to reveal the original 1977 pigment. But here is the golden rule for this era: It needs wax or it dies. Once you've polished it back to a shine, you've exposed "fresh" paint that has no modern UV filters. You have to seal it with a high-quality wax or sealant immediately to keep the oxygen out. Think of it like a cast-iron skillet-if you don't keep it seasoned, it's going to turn on you.
