How to Find Your 1962 Dodge's Color Code

Older Dodge paint codes were placed on top of the radiator support, often obscured by engine grease and oil. Later models list them on the drivers door jamb. The typical format is BS/GBS, but only BS is the color code; it can also appear as QBS, PBS, TBS with the first letter as a confusing Year Code. The G in GBS is not part of the color code. BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat; lately codes are simply listed as BS.

1962 Dodge Background Info

The 1962 Dodge Vibe

Welcome to 1962, the year Dodge decided to put the "Forward Look" in the rearview mirror and lean into the "Lean Breed" styling. Whether you're wrenching on a Dart, a Polara, or one of those bulletproof D-Series Trucks, you're dealing with an era of serious color experimentation. We've got 30 distinct shades in our vault from this year, ranging from the work-ready Omaha Orange and National School Bus Yellow to the high-style "Poly" metallics that defined the early sixties. If you're lucky enough to have a survivor in Desert Turquoise or the rare Dusty Rose Poly, you aren't just looking at a paint job-you're looking at a time capsule of Detroit optimism.

Paint Health Check

Since we're deep in the Single Stage Era, your 1962 Dodge didn't come from the factory with a clear coat protective layer. Back then, Dodge used "Lustre-Bond" baked enamel-a thick, pigment-heavy soup that was designed to be tough, but it has one major enemy: the sun. If your Toreador Red or Marlin Blue looks more like a dusty chalkboard than a shiny fender, you're looking at heavy oxidation. The pigments at the surface have literally died and turned into a chalky film. If it's a "Poly" finish (our term for those early metallics like Glade Green Poly), the metallic flakes are likely sitting right on the surface, ready to flake off if you look at them wrong.

Restoration Tip

The golden rule for 1962 steel: It needs wax or it dies. If you're performing a touch-up or a full panel repair with our solvent-based matches, remember that single-stage paint is porous. Once you've leveled your repair, you have to keep a high-quality carnauba wax or a period-correct sealant on it. That wax acts as the "sacrificial layer" that the factory never gave it. Without it, the oxygen in the air will go right back to work turning your fresh Angus Black into a dull charcoal gray within a few years. Seal it up tight and keep it out of the high-noon sun whenever you can.
