Since we're deep in the Single Stage Era, your 1962 Dodge didn't come from the factory with a clear coat protective layer. Back then, Dodge used "Lustre-Bond" baked enamel-a thick, pigment-heavy soup that was designed to be tough, but it has one major enemy: the sun. If your Toreador Red or Marlin Blue looks more like a dusty chalkboard than a shiny fender, you're looking at heavy oxidation. The pigments at the surface have literally died and turned into a chalky film. If it's a "Poly" finish (our term for those early metallics like Glade Green Poly), the metallic flakes are likely sitting right on the surface, ready to flake off if you look at them wrong.

Restoration Tip

The golden rule for 1962 steel: It needs wax or it dies. If you're performing a touch-up or a full panel repair with our solvent-based matches, remember that single-stage paint is porous. Once you've leveled your repair, you have to keep a high-quality carnauba wax or a period-correct sealant on it. That wax acts as the "sacrificial layer" that the factory never gave it.
