How to Find Your 1977 Chevrolet's Color Code

Chevrolet did not make it easy to find the color code. Over the years they used many different locations and did not standardize the color plate, so it can be hard to locate. Usually it is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise, the search may extend everywhere. The typical code is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC. Two tone codes can appear as BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N (U for Upper, L for Lower).

1977 Chevrolet Background Info

The 1977 Chevrolet Vibe

Welcome to 1977-the year of Star Wars, the peak of the disco inferno, and a time when Chevrolet decided that if a color existed in nature (or a neon sign), it belonged on a car. With 38 colors in our database for this year, Chevy wasn't just painting cars; they were staging a full-scale intervention against boring streets. Whether you were rocking a classic Corvette or one of the "All Other Models" like a Nova or a Monte Carlo, the palette was a wild ride. You had the "Earth Tone" staples like Buckskin Poly and Brown Poly for the suburbanites, while the risk-takers were out there turning heads in Bright Orange, Firethorn Poly, and the mythical, ultra-rare Corvette Chartreuse. It was a time when your car's personality was as loud as your 8-track player.

Paint Health Check

In '77, we were living deep in the Single Stage Era. Whether your Chevy was shot in acrylic lacquer (the Corvette standard) or the factory's "Magic-Mirror" acrylic enamel, there was no clear coat safety net. This paint is what I call "honest"-it shows its age. If your 1977 survivor looks like a chalkboard or has developed a "dusty" film that wipes off on your finger, you're looking at heavy Oxidation. The sun literally cooks the oils out of the pigment, leaving behind a chalky, dead surface. While these thick factory finishes were durable in their own way, they are thirsty. Without a clear top layer, the environment treats your Antique White or Bright Yellow like a buffet.

Restoration Tip

The golden rule for 1977 paint is simple: It needs wax or it dies. Because this is single-stage paint, you can actually "resurrect" it if there's enough pigment left. Use a high-quality rubbing compound to strip away that oxidized "chalk" and find the buried Mariner Blue or Dark Aqua Poly underneath. But don't stop there. Once you've brought back the shine, you must seal it immediately. Without a heavy coat of wax or a modern sealant, the paint will start "breathing" and oxidizing again within weeks. Think of it like skin-if you don't moisturize this 40-plus-year-old finish, it's going to crack, fade, and eventually flake off into the history books.
