How to Find Your BMW 630's Color Code

BMW Color Codes are usually found on the Color ID Tag in the driver-side door jamb or B-pillar area. The Color ID Tag is typically a sticker or plate; on some models and years it may be under the hood, sometimes at the back of the engine compartment near the firewall. BMW Color Codes are usually 3 digits, but can also appear as A52 or an older format like 354/7; common examples include 300, 475, A52, or 354/7.

The Color Breakdown

BMW really went for it with the 630. With 21 recorded colors, they moved effortlessly from the bold, "look-at-me" Phoenix Orange and Tuerkis Metallic to the sophisticated Sierra Beige. Whether your car is dressed in the deep Madeira or the icy Fjord Blue Metallic, these shades were designed to highlight those classic shark-nose lines. It's a palette that proves the 70s and 80s weren't just about brown-though they did give us Topaz Brown just to be sure.

What to Watch For

Before you start, you need your "Lacknummer" (that's German for paint code). Pop the hood and look at the driver's side strut tower; you should see a black sticker with the color name in German and a three-digit code. On these classic 6-series bodies, the paint is often thinner than modern cars. Keep a close eye on the rain gutters above the doors and the leading edge of the hood-wind and road grit tend to "sandblast" these areas over time, wearing them down to the bare metal. If you have a non-metallic like Chamonix White or Jade Green, you might notice the paint looking a bit "chalky" or dull; that's just the pigment getting thirsty for a little attention.

Driveway Repair Tip

If you're working with one of the many metallics, like Arctic Blue or Anthracite Gray, your best friend is a vigorous 60-second shake of the bottle. Those tiny metallic flakes like to settle at the bottom, and you need them dancing to get a good match. When using your touch-up brush, remember: dab, don't swipe. Fill the chip with a tiny drop of paint and let gravity level it out for you. If the chip is deep, it requires patience-apply one thin layer, let it dry for 20 minutes, and then come back for a second pass. It's better to build a tiny "hill" of paint than to try and fix it all with one big, messy blob.
