Water-Based Paint
What is Water-Based Paint?
Water-based paint is an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional solvent-based paints, while still offering an excellent quality paint with an exact factory color match. Because it uses water as its carrier instead of harsh solvents, it requires specific application and drying techniques to achieve a professional finish.
How Do I Know If My Paint Is Water-Based?
Water-based paints aren't sold as a separate product line. Whether your paint is solvent or water-based depends on your vehicle's specific factory color code.
If your color is water-based, you can get it in any of our standard product sizes:
- Paint Pens (1/2 oz): For small rock chips and hairline scratches.
- Paint Bottles with Brush (2 oz): For medium chips or scratches up to the size of a dime.
- Spray Cans (12 oz): For larger areas, single panel repaints, or blending.
- Professional Sizes (Pints, Quarts, Gallons): Ready-to-spray bulk paint for use with an airless spray gun on large repairs or full vehicle resprays.

Proper drying is the most important factor when using water-based paint. Unlike solvent-based paints that evaporate rapidly on their own, water-based paints require steady air movement and warmer temperatures to cure correctly.
Before You Start
Surface preparation is critical. If you use a solvent-based wax and grease remover to clean the repair area, you must allow extra time for the solvents to completely evaporate. Any trapped chemical residue will prevent the water-based paint from adhering properly and can cause bubbling or peeling.
How to Apply Water-Based Paint
1. Prime the surface
If any bare metal or plastic is visible, apply primer to seal it. Apply the primer in smooth, thin strokes. Let the primer layer dry completely before moving on to the color stage.
2. Apply the basecoat
Apply the water-based color layer using steady, light coats. Do not apply heavy coats, as water-based paint is prone to running and pooling if applied too thickly.
3. Allow proper drying time
Water-based paint takes longer to flash off than traditional paint. Wait for each layer to turn completely dull and dry before adding the next. You can use a fan to create gentle air movement and speed up evaporation, but avoid using direct, intense heat.
4. Apply the clearcoat
Water-based paint offers no protection on its own and will dry to a flat, matte finish. Once your final color coat is thoroughly dry, apply smooth layers of clearcoat. This seals the basecoat, provides UV protection, and adds the final glossy shine. Shop Clearcoats >
5. Polish the finish
Allow the repair to set for at least 3 days. Once fully cured, use rubbing compound (cutting creme) with a clean, soft cloth to buff the surface and polish the area to a smooth, high gloss. Shop Cutting Creme >
Helpful Tips
Apply the paint in a controlled environment between 60–80°F with low humidity. Keep your basecoat layers very thin to avoid runs. Use a fan to circulate air and speed up drying times between coats. Never apply clearcoat while the water-based paint is still wet or shiny.
Need a perfect match?
Water-based paints require careful attention to temperature and drying times. If you are working in a challenging environment with high humidity, extreme cold, or poor airflow, a professional body shop equipped with a climate-controlled spray booth may be the better choice for your repair.
