Even though the brand was winding down, your Grand Voyager carries one of the most popular and enduring shades in the Mopar family. This is not a simple, flat black. It is an obsidian base that holds a hidden depth, designed to make a large vehicle look more like a limousine than a family van. Because your car has spent nearly two decades on the road, the original finish has likely developed a fine network of surface scratches that dull that deep luster. When you repair a chip with this color, you are restoring that ink-like richness that once made the van stand out in the parking lot.

Technical Details

This is a pearl finish, which means it contains tiny mica flakes that give the paint its characteristic shimmer. Pearls are beautiful, but they are moody. If you apply the paint too heavily in one spot, the mica flakes will sink to the bottom of the layer, making the repair look darker and "muddier" than the surrounding panel. If you apply it too thin, the black base won't fully cover the primer. You have to find a balance by building the color gradually. This prevents the metallic particles from clumping together and ensures the repair catches the light at the same angle as the rest of the door or hood.

Best Practices

Before you spray or dab Plymouth Brilliant Black Pearl (check for code PXR), you need to shake the container for at least sixty seconds. The pearls are heavier than the pigment and will settle at the bottom of the vessel; if you don't mix them thoroughly, you will just be applying plain black paint. You can usually find your code on the driver's side door jamb or on the firewall inside the engine bay. Always test the color on the included card before touching the vehicle to see how the flakes settle. Keep the container moving as you apply the paint to maintain an even distribution of pearl. Let the area have plenty of drying time between coats to avoid trapping any haze in the finish.
