The Look

You are working with the definitive midnight shade of the mid-fifties. Whether this is for a Thunderbird or a Fairlane, this color is a pure, ink-like black that turns the body of the car into a mirror. Because it was the primary black for all models that year, it is the standard against which all other vintage blacks are measured. It makes chrome trim look like it belongs in a jewelry store, but it also shows every single speck of dust that lands on your car. Since this paint has been on the road for decades, be aware that it may have developed a slight grey or brown cast from the sun, so focus on your blending technique.

Technical Details

This is a solid finish with no metallic flakes or pearl effects. The benefit of a solid black is that it provides a deep, liquid look that metallics cannot replicate. The risk is that black is the most unforgiving color in the world. It will not hide ripples in the metal or poor sanding. Because there is no sparkle to distract the eye, your repair area needs to be level before you begin. Solid blacks are easy to match in terms of pigment, but they require a clean garage or a sheltered shade to prevent floating debris from landing in your wet finish.

Best Practices

You can find your paint code on the data plate located on the driver side door pillar. Before you spray or dab Ford Raven Black (check for code A (1955)), you must shake the container for at least a full minute to get the heavy black pigments moving. Test the color on the included card and let it dry to ensure it matches the current state of your finish. When you apply the paint, keep the container moving to prevent heavy buildup and allow for a consistent drying time between your layers. If you are using a pen or brush for small chips, use light dabs rather than a single heavy coat to keep the repair flush with the surrounding surface.
