Your Paint Color Profile

25 (1975) - Catalina Blue Irid

The Look

Since your truck has been on the road since the mid-seventies, you know that this specific shade represents a unique moment for the Chevrolet square body. This isn't a loud, neon blue. Instead, it offers a grounded, professional appearance that feels right at home on a fender or a tailgate. It was only available for a single year, making it a rare find today. It brings a level of sophistication to a utility vehicle, giving it a character that modern flat blues just cannot replicate.

Technical Details

This is an iridescent finish, which is the 1975 term for a metallic. This means the paint contains tiny flakes that reflect light to give the surface depth. Metallics require a bit more patience than solid colors because the flakes are heavy. If they don't land evenly, the repair can look darker in some spots and lighter in others, a problem often called mottling. Because the pigment and the metal particles like to separate, the way you handle the application determines if the repair disappears or stands out.

Best Practices

You will typically find your identification sticker inside the glove box door of these vintage trucks. Before you spray or dab Chevrolet Catalina Blue Irid (check for code 25 (1975)), you need to shake it for 60 seconds. This is a mandatory step to get those metallic flakes off the bottom and into the mix. Test the color on the included card to ensure the metallic density matches your existing paint. While applying, keep the container moving to prevent the flakes from puddling in one spot. If you are working in a garage or the shade, make sure you have plenty of light to see how the flakes are settling as you go.

How to Find Your Chevrolet's Color Code

Chevrolet did not make it easy to find the color code. Over the years they used many different locations and did not standardize the color plate, so it can be hard to locate. Usually it is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise, the search may extend everywhere. The typical code is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC. Two tone codes can appear as BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N (U for Upper, L for Lower).

Will absolutely order from this company again.

After ordering touch-up paint from Lexus I was still waiting for it a month later. If they'd told me upfront it would take that long I wouldn't have ordered in the first place. Paint Scratch was recommended by a friend who restores cars. Easy ordering, fair price and fast shipping. The color match is great especially considering my car is a 2012. Will absolutely order from this company again. Reason I chose this business: Lexus collision repair and a local collision repair. Will use paint less dent removal and touch up chipped paint myself. Reason I chose this product: Spouse sideswiped passenger side of car while backing out of garage. Mostly plastic transfer from his wheel well trim but pressure creased and cracked the paint causing a bare strip 1/8 wide x 4" long below door handle. Scratches on door handle and a few small chips on both doors.

Simply the best custom mixed paint in spray cans

Used Paint Scratch metallic custom mixed spray cans paint on a hood panel with excellent coverage and texture over the surface. Metallic paint can be very unforgiving out of a spray can, sputtering pigmentation dots on the panel being sprayed and thus ruining the paint job. No such issues with Paint Scratch custom mixed metallic paint spray cans. Paint sprayed strong and evenly till the last drop of paint in the can. Shipping time was faster than expected. Reason I chose this business: Having tried other brands of custom mixed metallic paint with terrible results, sputtering pigmentation tint dots from the spray nozzle in spite of vigorously shaking of can prior to application and loss of propellant rendering the lower fifth of the can's paint useless, Paint Scratch custom mixed metallic paint sprays out beautifully and strong all the way to the last gram of paint in the can. Simply the best custom mixed paint in spray cans for automotive restoration. Thank you Paint Scratch.
