The Look

This isn't a modern, flashy blue. It's deep and moody. Think of cold lake water on a cloudy day. Originally seen on the 1969-1969 lineup, this shade defined the early character of the BMW 2002 and the elegant E9 coupes. In the shade, it looks almost navy. In the sun, the metallic flake wakes up and reveals a medium blue with a grayish undertone. It's a sophisticated choice for those restoring vintage "Additional Colors" models. It's classic. It's serious. It looks like German engineering feels.

Technical Details

This is a metallic finish. It's packed with fine metal flakes that dance in the light. Dark metallics are notorious for showing stripes if your application is uneven. If the flakes don't lay down flat, you'll see dark patches or "tiger stripes." Since this is a darker blue, any inconsistency in your stroke or spray distance will be obvious. Consistency is the only way to win. This color requires a clear topcoat to reach its full depth and protect those sensitive metal bits from the elements.

Best Practices

Before you spray or dab BMW Baikal Metallic (check for code 588), you need to shake it for 60 seconds. Those metal flakes are heavy. They sink to the bottom of the container. If you don't mix them, your repair will look like a flat, muddy blue. On these vintage machines, you can usually find the paint plate on the driver's side strut tower or under the hood. Test the color on the included card before you touch the car. When applying, keep the container moving. Do not pause over one spot. Work in thin layers and allow plenty of drying time between each pass.

The Color ID Tag is typically a sticker or plate; on some models and years it may be under the hood, sometimes at the back of the engine compartment near the firewall. BMW Color Codes are usually 3 digits, but can also appear as A52 or an older format like 354/7; common examples include 300, 475, A52, or 354/7.

Will absolutely order from this company again.

After ordering touch-up paint from Lexus I was still waiting for it a month later. If they'd told me upfront it would take that long I wouldn't have ordered in the first place. Paint Scratch was recommended by a friend who restores cars. Easy ordering, fair price and fast shipping. The color match is great especially considering my car is a 2012. Will absolutely order from this company again. Reason I chose this business: Lexus collision repair and a local collision repair. Will use paint less dent removal and touch up chipped paint myself. Reason I chose this product: Spouse sideswiped passenger side of car while backing out of garage. Mostly plastic transfer from his wheel well trim but pressure creased and cracked the paint causing a bare strip 1/8 wide x 4" long below door handle. Scratches on door handle and a few small chips on both doors.

Simply the best custom mixed paint in spray cans

Used Paint Scratch metallic custom mixed spray cans paint on a hood panel with excellent coverage and texture over the surface. Metallic paint can be very unforgiving out of a spray can, sputtering pigmentation dots on the panel being sprayed and thus ruining the paint job. No such issues with Paint Scratch custom mixed metallic paint spray cans. Paint sprayed strong and evenly till the last drop of paint in the can. Shipping time was faster than expected. Reason I chose this business: Having tried other brands of custom mixed metallic paint with terrible results, sputtering pigmentation tint dots from the spray nozzle in spite of vigorously shaking of can prior to application and loss of propellant rendering the lower fifth of the can's paint useless, Paint Scratch custom mixed metallic paint sprays out beautifully and strong all the way to the last gram of paint in the can.
