First Impressions

This isn't a high-octane muscle car color. It's a Sunday drive in a Pacer. AMC leaned hard into these soft, lifestyle pastels during the late seventies to make their quirky designs feel approachable. On a Gremlin or a Hornet, it looks less like a machine and more like a piece of vintage furniture. It's calm. It's unpretentious. It's the color of a 1978 suburban driveway.

Technical Details

This is a straight solid finish. No metallic flakes to hide behind. No pearl shimmer to mess up your perspective. That makes your job simpler. You won't have to worry about mottling or uneven stripes. However, solids are honest. They show every ripple and every sanding mark you left behind. Before you spray or dab AMC Powder Blue (check for code 7D), you need to shake it for 60 seconds. Since there's no flake in the mix, the color is very stable as it dries.

Application Notes

Hunt for your ID tag on the driver's side door pillar. It might be buried under decades of grime, so give it a wipe. Before you start, test the color on the included card. If you are using a nozzle, watch your spray distance to avoid heavy puddles. If you are using a pen, don't press too hard. Keep the container moving at all times. Give the paint plenty of drying time between layers. Work in a cool garage or the shade to keep the flow even. Thick coats lead to sags. Light layers lead to victory.

How to Find Your AMC's Color Code

AMC paint codes are hidden on top of the radiator support; engine grease and oil often make them impossible to read. Typical format is BS/GBS; only the BS portion is the color code. It can also appear as QBS, PBS, TBS, etc. The first letter is the Year Code, which makes color codes confusing. BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat. The G in GBS is not part of the color code. Lately AMC lists codes as BS. AMC has many two tone combos on some cars and often omitted the secondary color information.

Will absolutely order from this company again.

After ordering touch-up paint from Lexus I was still waiting for it a month later. If they'd told me upfront it would take that long I wouldn't have ordered in the first place. Paint Scratch was recommended by a friend who restores cars. Easy ordering, fair price and fast shipping. The color match is great especially considering my car is a 2012. Will absolutely order from this company again. Reason I chose this business: Lexus collision repair and a local collision repair. Will use paint less dent removal and touch up chipped paint myself. Reason I chose this product: Spouse sideswiped passenger side of car while backing out of garage. Mostly plastic transfer from his wheel well trim but pressure creased and cracked the paint causing a bare strip 1/8 wide x 4" long below door handle. Scratches on door handle and a few small chips on both doors.

Simply the best custom mixed paint in spray cans

Used Paint Scratch metallic custom mixed spray cans paint on a hood panel with excellent coverage and texture over the surface. Metallic paint can be very unforgiving out of a spray can, sputtering pigmentation dots on the panel being sprayed and thus ruining the paint job. No such issues with Paint Scratch custom mixed metallic paint spray cans. Paint sprayed strong and evenly till the last drop of paint in the can. Shipping time was faster than expected. Reason I chose this business: Having tried other brands of custom mixed metallic paint with terrible results, sputtering pigmentation tint dots from the spray nozzle in spite of vigorously shaking of can prior to application and loss of propellant rendering the lower fifth of the can's paint useless, Paint Scratch custom mixed metallic paint sprays out beautifully and strong all the way to the last gram of paint in the can.
