Your Paint Color Profile

ECJ/CE7L - Flame Yellow Tricoat

The Look

Your Smart Fortwo was never meant to blend into a sea of gray crossovers, and this color is the reason why. Released as a signature look for the mid-2010s, this shade turns your car into a high-visibility urban explorer. Because your car has a compact frame, the yellow feels concentrated and intense rather than overwhelming. Since these cars have likely spent their lives parked on city streets, keep in mind that sun exposure can slightly alter the original tone, so your repair might need a bit of patience to blend with the aged panels.

Technical Details

This isn't a simple solid yellow. It is a pearl finish that uses a tricoat process to create depth. Yellow pigments are notorious in the paint world for being thin and somewhat transparent. This means they don't hide the surface underneath very well. If you apply the paint too thick, it will look dark or muddy; if you go too thin, the primer might peek through and make the repair look pale. The "Flame" effect comes from how light hits the pearl mid-layer, so the goal is to build the color slowly to match that factory glow.

Best Practices

You will find your paint code on a sticker located on the driver's side door pillar. Before you spray or dab Smart Flame Yellow Tricoat (check for code ECJ/CE7L), you need to shake the container for at least sixty seconds to ensure the heavy pigments are fully mixed. Do not skip the step of testing the color on the included card first. This allows you to see how many layers are required to match the depth of your car's specific finish. When applying, keep the container moving to prevent the paint from pooling. Give each layer plenty of drying time in a covered garage or a patch of shade so the finish sets evenly.

How to Find Your Smart's Color Code

Smart color code locations: on the drivers door jamb, on the radiator support, or on the cowling under the hood. If the code is not found, Smart can be contacted to see if they can determine the color code. If there is no color code, alternatives include the PPG or Dupont (Axalta) paint formula number.

Will absolutely order from this company again.

After ordering touch-up paint from Lexus I was still waiting for it a month later. If they'd told me upfront it would take that long I wouldn't have ordered in the first place. Paint Scratch was recommended by a friend who restores cars. Easy ordering, fair price and fast shipping. The color match is great especially considering my car is a 2012. Will absolutely order from this company again. Reason I chose this business: Lexus collision repair and a local collision repair. Will use paint less dent removal and touch up chipped paint myself. Reason I chose this product: Spouse sideswiped passenger side of car while backing out of garage. Mostly plastic transfer from his wheel well trim but pressure creased and cracked the paint causing a bare strip 1/8 wide x 4" long below door handle. Scratches on door handle and a few small chips on both doors.

Simply the best custom mixed paint in spray cans

Used Paint Scratch metallic custom mixed spray cans paint on a hood panel with excellent coverage and texture over the surface. Metallic paint can be very unforgiving out of a spray can, sputtering pigmentation dots on the panel being sprayed and thus ruining the paint job. No such issues with Paint Scratch custom mixed metallic paint spray cans. Paint sprayed strong and evenly till the last drop of paint in the can. Shipping time was faster than expected. Reason I chose this business: Having tried other brands of custom mixed metallic paint with terrible results, sputtering pigmentation tint dots from the spray nozzle in spite of vigorously shaking of can prior to application and loss of propellant rendering the lower fifth of the can's paint useless, Paint Scratch custom mixed metallic paint sprays out beautifully and strong all the way to the last gram of paint in the can. Simply the best custom mixed paint in spray cans for automotive restoration. Thank you Paint Scratch.
