Hi,
I recently bought a car that had been repainted by a moron. The guy who painted it masked everything and didn't take anything off. Even the mudflaps were left on! I've managed to repair some of the damage by removing trim and touching up/wetsanding the seams between the original paint and the new. It actually looks pretty good, since I'm wetsanding and touching up each panel as I go as well. but there are a couple of panels on the car that I want to completely repaint.
The car is a 2001 Acura Integra in Milano Red. Milano Red is a 3-stage paint: Orange base coat, purple transparent mid-coat, followed by clear. It's expensive, and seems like it would be difficult to do well. Judging by the apparent competence of the a** clown who painted it, the replacement paint is NOT the OEM 3-stage paint, even though it's a pretty close match to the original color. I bet the paint job probably took place at some place like Maaco. So, trying to match the original paint is probably a waste of time.
So, my question is: Is it possible to match the paint anyway, and if so, how would I do it? I have heard about a device that can sample the color of existing paint and provide input to a mixing process, but I don't know what to call it so I can google it and find a place that does it.
