Your Paint Color Profile

470 - Sonic Blue Metallic

The Look

This is the electric soul of the Volvo "R" performance line. While most Swedish colors lean toward the reserved side, this shade was built to highlight the aggressive lines of the 2006 and 2007 S60 and V70 models. Because your car has likely spent nearly two decades on the road, the original finish might have shifted slightly from its factory vibrance. This is a high-energy blue that demands attention, and it looks best when the light catches the curves of the fenders.

Technical Details

This finish is a complex metallic that relies on a specific density of silver flakes to create its signature glow. Metallic paints carry a risk of mottling, where the flakes cluster together and create dark, dirty-looking patches instead of a smooth shimmer. If you apply the paint too heavily in one spot, the metallic particles sink and lose their reflective edge. Success depends on maintaining a light, even flow so the flakes can lay flat and catch the light correctly.

Best Practices

Before you spray or dab Volvo Sonic Blue Metallic (check for code 470 on your driver-side door pillar or under the hood), you need to shake the container for at least sixty seconds. Those heavy metallic flakes love to settle at the bottom, and skipping this step will result in a color that looks too dark or flat. Always test the color on the included card to confirm the match against your specific car. Whether you are using a nozzle or a pen, keep the container moving to prevent the paint from pooling. Work in a garage or the shade to ensure the drying time remains consistent, as direct sun can cause the edges to harden too fast and leave visible lines.

How to Find Your Volvo's Color Code

Volvo paint codes can be anywhere in the engine compartment. They are typically on the radiator support, but may also be on the sheet metal on either side of the engine compartment, so finding them can be challenging. Typical color code format: 421. 421 corresponds to Dark Olive Pearl Clearcoat. Same color code, different name across models; for example, 421 could also be called Dark Green Clearcoat or Mystic Green Clearcoat.

Will absolutely order from this company again.

After ordering touch-up paint from Lexus I was still waiting for it a month later. If they'd told me upfront it would take that long I wouldn't have ordered in the first place. Paint Scratch was recommended by a friend who restores cars. Easy ordering, fair price and fast shipping. The color match is great especially considering my car is a 2012. Will absolutely order from this company again. Reason I chose this business: Lexus collision repair and a local collision repair. Will use paint less dent removal and touch up chipped paint myself. Reason I chose this product: Spouse sideswiped passenger side of car while backing out of garage. Mostly plastic transfer from his wheel well trim but pressure creased and cracked the paint causing a bare strip 1/8 wide x 4" long below door handle. Scratches on door handle and a few small chips on both doors.

Simply the best custom mixed paint in spray cans

Used Paint Scratch metallic custom mixed spray cans paint on a hood panel with excellent coverage and texture over the surface. Metallic paint can be very unforgiving out of a spray can, sputtering pigmentation dots on the panel being sprayed and thus ruining the paint job. No such issues with Paint Scratch custom mixed metallic paint spray cans. Paint sprayed strong and evenly till the last drop of paint in the can. Shipping time was faster than expected. Reason I chose this business: Having tried other brands of custom mixed metallic paint with terrible results, sputtering pigmentation tint dots from the spray nozzle in spite of vigorously shaking of can prior to application and loss of propellant rendering the lower fifth of the can's paint useless, Paint Scratch custom mixed metallic paint sprays out beautifully and strong all the way to the last gram of paint in the can. Simply the best custom mixed paint in spray cans for automotive restoration. Thank you Paint Scratch.
