Your Paint Color Profile

A2/HA2 - Sterling Metallic

The Look

This silver defined the turn of the decade for Jeep. It is not a flashy, sparkling silver; it is a heavy, industrial metallic that makes a Wrangler or Cherokee look like it was carved from a single block of aluminum. Since your Jeep has likely spent over thirty years on the road, the original finish may have aged, but this color remains the definitive 90s aesthetic for the YJ and XJ generations. It provides a clean, mechanical appearance that hides road grime much better than the darker forest greens of the same era.

Technical Details

This is a true metallic finish, which means the silver flakes are the stars of the show. While solid colors are forgiving, silvers demand respect because the metal particles like to settle or bunch up. If you apply the paint too heavily in one spot, the flakes will pile together and create dark patches or tiger stripes. This mottling effect happens because the flakes cannot lay flat. Maintaining a consistent flow and using light layers is the only way to keep the finish uniform.

Best Practices

On these early 90s models, your paint code is typically stamped onto a metal plate located on the driver-side firewall near the hood hinge or on the radiator support. Before you spray or dab Jeep Sterling Metallic (check for code A2/HA2), you need to shake it for 60 seconds. Test the color on the included card to ensure the metallic flakes are distributing evenly. Keep the container moving at all times to prevent the silver particles from pooling in one spot. If you are using a brush or pen, use the absolute minimum amount of paint per layer to prevent the metallic grain from looking muddy. Allow ample drying time between each thin coat to build the color properly.

How to Find Your Jeep's Color Code

Jeep codes are difficult to find. In the good old days, they hid them on top of the radiator support, under engine grease and oil. Later models put them on the drivers door jamb. Typical format: BS/GBS; only BS is the color code (also QBS, PBS, TBS, etc.). The first letter is a "Year Code". BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat; the G in GBS is not part of the color code. Lately, Jeep lists just BS.

Will absolutely order from this company again.

After ordering touch-up paint from Lexus I was still waiting for it a month later. If they'd told me upfront it would take that long I wouldn't have ordered in the first place. Paint Scratch was recommended by a friend who restores cars. Easy ordering, fair price and fast shipping. The color match is great especially considering my car is a 2012. Will absolutely order from this company again. Reason I chose this business: Lexus collision repair and a local collision repair. Will use paint less dent removal and touch up chipped paint myself. Reason I chose this product: Spouse sideswiped passenger side of car while backing out of garage. Mostly plastic transfer from his wheel well trim but pressure creased and cracked the paint causing a bare strip 1/8 wide x 4" long below door handle. Scratches on door handle and a few small chips on both doors.

Simply the best custom mixed paint in spray cans

Used Paint Scratch metallic custom mixed spray cans paint on a hood panel with excellent coverage and texture over the surface. Metallic paint can be very unforgiving out of a spray can, sputtering pigmentation dots on the panel being sprayed and thus ruining the paint job. No such issues with Paint Scratch custom mixed metallic paint spray cans. Paint sprayed strong and evenly till the last drop of paint in the can. Shipping time was faster than expected. Reason I chose this business: Having tried other brands of custom mixed metallic paint with terrible results, sputtering pigmentation tint dots from the spray nozzle in spite of vigorously shaking of can prior to application and loss of propellant rendering the lower fifth of the can's paint useless, Paint Scratch custom mixed metallic paint sprays out beautifully and strong all the way to the last gram of paint in the can. Simply the best custom mixed paint in spray cans for automotive restoration. Thank you Paint Scratch.
