Your Paint Color Profile

36Y - Onyx Metallic

The Look

If you are driving a mid-2000s Baja or Outback, you likely have this color on the lower plastic cladding or as the primary finish on your Legacy. It is a brooding, industrial grey that hides road salt and mud far better than a pure black. Since your car has likely spent two decades navigating trails or weather, the original finish has probably matured into a slightly flatter, more utilitarian look than it had on the showroom floor.

Technical Details

This is a metallic finish. It relies on microscopic metal flakes to catch the light and provide depth. Dark metallics like this are notoriously sensitive to application thickness. If you apply the paint too heavily in one spot, the flakes will sink and the area will look like a dark, muddy smudge. If you go too light, the finish will look dusty and silver. You want a middle ground where the flakes sit evenly across the surface to catch the sun without creating stripes.

Best Practices

You can usually find your paint code stamped on a silver plate located on the passenger side strut tower under the hood or along the driver's door jamb. Before you spray or dab Subaru Onyx Metallic (check for code 36Y), you need to shake the container for a full minute to get those heavy metal flakes off the bottom. Test the color on the included card to see how the flake density looks compared to your door or fender. When you start, keep the container moving to prevent the paint from pooling in one spot. Give each layer plenty of drying time so the metallic particles can set properly before you apply the next coat. For the best results, work in a cool garage rather than in direct sunlight.

How to Find Your Subaru's Color Code

The color plate may be on top of the drivers side strut; in recent years it is in the driver or passenger side door jambs. Typical Subaru paint codes are three digits long and composed of numbers and letters. For two tone cars a code like "3M6" appears: "Two Tone Color Combination 3M6 Atlantic Blue Pearl 33A Granite Gray Opal Clearcoat 35S". The color code matters since the same paint can have different names across models.

Will absolutely order from this company again.

After ordering touch-up paint from Lexus I was still waiting for it a month later. If they'd told me upfront it would take that long I wouldn't have ordered in the first place. Paint Scratch was recommended by a friend who restores cars. Easy ordering, fair price and fast shipping. The color match is great especially considering my car is a 2012. Will absolutely order from this company again. Reason I chose this business: Lexus collision repair and a local collision repair. Will use paint less dent removal and touch up chipped paint myself. Reason I chose this product: Spouse sideswiped passenger side of car while backing out of garage. Mostly plastic transfer from his wheel well trim but pressure creased and cracked the paint causing a bare strip 1/8 wide x 4" long below door handle. Scratches on door handle and a few small chips on both doors.

Simply the best custom mixed paint in spray cans

Used Paint Scratch metallic custom mixed spray cans paint on a hood panel with excellent coverage and texture over the surface. Metallic paint can be very unforgiving out of a spray can, sputtering pigmentation dots on the panel being sprayed and thus ruining the paint job. No such issues with Paint Scratch custom mixed metallic paint spray cans. Paint sprayed strong and evenly till the last drop of paint in the can. Shipping time was faster than expected. Reason I chose this business: Having tried other brands of custom mixed metallic paint with terrible results, sputtering pigmentation tint dots from the spray nozzle in spite of vigorously shaking of can prior to application and loss of propellant rendering the lower fifth of the can's paint useless, Paint Scratch custom mixed metallic paint sprays out beautifully and strong all the way to the last gram of paint in the can. Simply the best custom mixed paint in spray cans for automotive restoration. Thank you Paint Scratch.
