Your Paint Color Profile

L-5 (1975) - Moondust Poly

{ "result": "Dodge code L-5 Moondust Poly is a metallic finish primarily used in 1975. The term \"Poly\" (short for Polychromatic) was the standard Chrysler nomenclature for metallic paints during this era. It is a light tan/gold metallic. In 1975, this color was available across the Dodge lineup, including models like the Coronet, Charger, Monaco, and Dart. For vehicles from this era, the paint code is typically found on the Fender Tag located on the driver-side inner fender under the hood. It can also sometimes be found on a door jamb sticker." }

The Look

This color is a time capsule from 1975. It captures that specific era of Dodge design where earthy, sophisticated tones ruled the road. Because it was used across the entire lineup, you might find it on a heavy-duty Monaco or a stylish Charger. It is a subtle, champagne-leaning gold that changes its personality depending on whether you are standing in the garage or out in the direct sun. Since your car has likely seen decades of light, the original finish might have shifted, but this shade remains a masterclass in mid-seventies cool.

Technical Details

You are working with a metallic finish, which means the paint is loaded with tiny reflective flakes. These flakes give the car its glow, but they also create a challenge for a small repair. If you apply the paint too heavily in one spot, the metal particles will sink and bunch together, making the touch-up look darker than the surrounding area. This is known as mottling. To avoid a blotchy look, you must focus on thin layers rather than trying to cover the damage in one single pass.

Best Practices

Pop your hood and look at the driver-side inner fender; you should find a metal plate known as the fender tag which lists your specifications. Before you spray or dab Dodge Moondust Poly (check for code L-5 (1975)), you need to shake it for 60 seconds. Those metallic flakes are heavy and will settle at the bottom of the reservoir quickly. Test the color on the included card to ensure the flake density looks right. When you begin the repair, keep the container moving to maintain a consistent flow. Allow for plenty of drying time between your light coats so the finish builds up evenly without disturbing the layers underneath.

How to Find Your Dodge's Color Code

Older Dodge paint codes were placed on top of the radiator support, often obscured by engine grease and oil. Later models list them on the drivers door jamb. The typical format is BS/GBS, but only BS is the color code; it can also appear as QBS, PBS, TBS with the first letter as a confusing Year Code. The G in GBS is not part of the color code. BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat; lately codes are simply listed as BS.

Will absolutely order from this company again.

After ordering touch-up paint from Lexus I was still waiting for it a month later. If they'd told me upfront it would take that long I wouldn't have ordered in the first place. Paint Scratch was recommended by a friend who restores cars. Easy ordering, fair price and fast shipping. The color match is great especially considering my car is a 2012. Will absolutely order from this company again. Reason I chose this business: Lexus collision repair and a local collision repair. Will use paint less dent removal and touch up chipped paint myself. Reason I chose this product: Spouse sideswiped passenger side of car while backing out of garage. Mostly plastic transfer from his wheel well trim but pressure creased and cracked the paint causing a bare strip 1/8 wide x 4" long below door handle. Scratches on door handle and a few small chips on both doors.

Simply the best custom mixed paint in spray cans

Used Paint Scratch metallic custom mixed spray cans paint on a hood panel with excellent coverage and texture over the surface. Metallic paint can be very unforgiving out of a spray can, sputtering pigmentation dots on the panel being sprayed and thus ruining the paint job. No such issues with Paint Scratch custom mixed metallic paint spray cans. Paint sprayed strong and evenly till the last drop of paint in the can. Shipping time was faster than expected. Reason I chose this business: Having tried other brands of custom mixed metallic paint with terrible results, sputtering pigmentation tint dots from the spray nozzle in spite of vigorously shaking of can prior to application and loss of propellant rendering the lower fifth of the can's paint useless, Paint Scratch custom mixed metallic paint sprays out beautifully and strong all the way to the last gram of paint in the can. Simply the best custom mixed paint in spray cans for automotive restoration. Thank you Paint Scratch.
